Junk TV affecting our children
Hooked on toxic TV: Teen viewing diaries reveal alarming diet of sex, greed and cruelty | Mail Online"Cruelty. greed. Graphic under-age sex. Forget the watershed... thanks to today's technology, your children can watch ANYTHING at ANY TIME. We asked four teenage girls to keep a diary of their viewing. What they told us was alarming"
I found this article alarming.
No wonder our society is deteriorating.
Do you monitor what your children watch?
Do you see whether or not it is warping their view of what is an acceptable way to live?

Defenatly, My little one is sometimes I feel in a trance watching TV.
In all honesty I do not monitor what is watched, but Im usually in the same room so would see if its something that I class as unacceptable.
We live in a TV society, myself included, Im looking forward to 24 tonight, but recently have strayed away from the soaps ect and gone more for police shows (reality) and the likes of discovery, history channels ect.
I feel it has a huge impact on society and what can be classed as acceptable.

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
I have thought for a very long time that TV, films and video games must be impacting on the way kids behave. There is far to much violence which is seen to be acceptable, kids should be getting out and excercising more instead of being transported to other worlds.

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
My children are stil quite young, 8 and 5, so I monitor their viewing very closely.
I won't allow them to watch tv for long periods, no having the tv blaring out when no-one is watching and neither child has a tv in their bedroom.
I encourage other activities before tv....hobbies, playing out, playing made up games or board games.
My 8 yr old likes to play on the x box but, again, I don't allow him on for long periods, nor is he allowed to play 18 rated games.
I probably come accross as very strict when you read this but I think if you set the scene when they're young then they'll be less likely to lump about in front of the tv/xbox for long periods when they're older. They will be used to enjoying other things.

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
I have looked at the programmes on all the five main channels tonight, and nothing there that I consider junk. Some decent stuff.

Yes, it does look very worrying.
Could anyone tell me the channel for The Girls of the Playboy Mansion please?

Thanks very much, Benipete. I regard it as nothing less than my public duty to watch this disgusting programme to assess for myself how bad this problem really is!

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
Thanks, Benipete. Think I may have to watch this Playboy programme a few times to accurately assess its content.

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
In all honesty
Its not the TV that's at fault for children watching 'junk TV' its the fact the children haven't been taught to do better things with their time.
Oh but...we are all blameless. Pah!

yep..it's never anything to do with us parents..it's all the fault of those "other" parents that don't care.

The only alarming thing about the article is that you as a 'normal' type of person find it alarming, there will always be parent's that don't give a monkey's about what 'their' children watch, but normal parent's do give a monkey's about what 'our' children watch.

Perhaps if you came out of your own trance you would realise your little one doesn't need to be in front of the television there will, if you look carefully be a switch marked OFF, or similar, then you could spend your time entertaining & teaching the child yourself.

Re: Junk TV affecting our children
it isn't just TV.....programmes can be accessed through computers......I guess this mainly attracts the teens with laptops that they can take into their room......so I would think that is much harder to monitor...unless there is a parental lock on their laptop.
