With the first I know it was a victim of the constraints of its time, both in terms of story and effects but is surprisingly good. It does make me wonder what hairdressing technology we have lost to time as the female lead witnesses an a-bomb explosion, is in a plane crash, crawls through ditches and spends the night in a ruined house yet still wakes up with perfect hair in the morning. Now that is quality.
The more recent Spielberg / Cruise effort is also good and at least looks the business but suffers from that silly "they've always been here" plot and the stupid "Let's go and see Mom" plot.
So yeah, both versions worth watching.
That said when the recent one came out an independent British adaptation of the book was released, it's supposed to be a bit shonky (relying heavily on sub-par effects) but I'd still love to see it.

My other half actually commented of the Hair thing when we were watching the film, marvelous how they can be dragged though a hedge backwards and still look a million dollars
