Oops. I meant to add more to that post, but got distracted.

I had no problems with people PMing the seller concerning addresses or anything post-sale. It was just I believe that any negotiations should be conducted on the forum. All this "I've PMed you" stuff is pretty underhand, but as Mick says, it would be hard to stop people doing that if they wanted to.

Other forums have a policy whereby if a sale is seen to have been conducted 'off forum', then both the seller and buyer are banned from selling on the forum again.

And quite pointless. You dont read to read in a thread that you have had a PM, it pops up to tell you so.

Re: Buying and Selling Forum question

I've usually taken 'I've PM'd you' as a message to the other readers that the PMer is having the item and has requested contact details etc via PM. I think I've probably just written that myself i the actual threads. Must remember in future to be more specific and say that I wish to purchase the item.

Re: Buying and Selling Forum question

What I meant was (this is becoming a bit of a saga), if a person is selling something for £50 and a buyer wants to offer £40 for the item, then it should be done on the forum and not by PM. Then if someone wants to step in and offer £45, they can do so in full knowledge of what has already been offered. If the £40 offer is rejected, then it saves other people hassling the seller with similar offers.

By the same token, if someone offers the full asking price, then that should be the item sold. It would cut out any attempts to drive the price up or to undermine other people.

As I said before, it works really well on other forums I use and they have many more members than AccyWeb.

Re: Buying and Selling Forum question

That may be teetering on the verge of being a bit of an auction though and that's what we're not supposed to be doing on here.

Eh? How is that an auction? The seller states that they want £50 for an item. Someone offers £40 for it and the seller is free to accept or reject the offer. Other people can jump in and make better offers, but anyone who offers the asking price gets first priority. Nobody would be allowed to offer over the asking price and any buyer has to decide whether to risk offering less and losing the item to someone who offers the asking price.
