Re: Rules of engagement
You aren't being awkward Tricia.
I found it all very confusing when I first joined too. The search is useful, but does bring up unrelated topics and threads as well.
The best thing to do, as others have suggested, is to ask how or where you can find out the information you need. People here are always willing to help.

Yes you are, and you do.
When I first joined I didn't know what or who the moderators were, or even what are how you pm'd, so it can still be confusing.

Re: Rules of engagement
I think the best thing to do is to get stuck in. Post a few times and you start getting the hang of it.

I did. I think I waded in and made about twenty posts moments after becoming a member.
It still took me by suprise however, when a pop up appeared about a week later and said I had a personal message from someone called Pendy.

Re: Rules of engagement
Exactly, if you just plough into it you sort of learn it as you go along. About three weeks after joining I asked a really daft question.
I asked why my name and the name of the project-which-shall-no-longer-be-mentioned came up in red. It was pointed out to me that they only came up in red when I had put them into the search feature. Duh!
A few people politely told me what was happening and I carried on posting.
It's almost impossible to teach someone everything before you start - in any walk of life you learn things on the job.

Re: Rules of engagement
Less said,
“Perhaps you have found a place for yourself here on accyweb then Tricia, sorting through the many posts and putting them in order for the next lot of people that come on expecting everything to be done for them?”
Well, I thought I had, until I read your post, Less. You read far more into my statement than was intended. You must know I was doing it for my own enlightenment, not with the intention of setting others straight. I would not presume. I thought I had made it clear that I don’t expect “everything done” for me. I was just asking for a bit of help.
“Yes, I know that's a bit harsh isn't it? But so is your criticism”
Well, at least you admit it – now, that’s what I call criticism! Your remark was totally undeserved and uncalled for. All I did was make a suggestion which has been exaggerated beyond all bounds. It was certainly not meant as a criticism of the moderators, who, in my opinion, are doing a great job, as I have told them in the past (well, Roy, anyway). Thank goodness for the common sense of some other members.
“There would still be people saying it's difficult to navigate”
Maybe – but probably a lot fewer.
“If when you do a search for something try wording it differently if you don't find something straight away”
As I said before, I have done just that – on many occasions.
“accyweb is set up and worked without making a profit so the admin' and the moderators give their time for nothing, so although you aren't the first and perhaps won't be the last to make suggestions to improve the site, they all have their own lives and livings to take care of.”
That is exactly what I had in mind when, naively perhaps, I made the suggestion. I thought it would make their lives easier if people could find things out for themselves instead of pestering the mods with emails and making them repeatedly answer the same questions.
And that is why I asked the question in this forum. I was sure there must be members out there who know the answers. And Lettie proved me right.
Well, Less, thank you for the “sticky” link about donations – but it only told me more or less what I already know. Would one of you friendly people out there please tell me – where IS the PayPal button?
I am a great fan of this site. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again. I just want to be able to make the most of the limited time I can spend visiting it, instead of wasting it in fruitless searches.
In retrospect, I could have chosen a better title. It was not meant to be belligerent.
Ever heard the phrase, “I’m sorry I asked”? If it weren’t for Lettie and a couple of others, I might wish I hadn’t. Anyway, that’s my last word on the subject. Insult away, if it pleases you.

It is a puzzler... I'm sure that I became thicker after 1,000 posts ... Maybe it's changed
