Re: Spell checker
We have waited this long Roy, a few more months of chuckling at other peoples mistakes will not hurt us too much. Don't forget, if you want the best sun lounger, you have to get up early in Germany.........

Re: Spell checker
A spellcheck facility could prove useful for some people. My spellchecker usually comes in the form of an Oxford English Dictionary.
If I'm unsure of the spelling of any particular word, whilst working on the laptop, I will open up Microsoft Word and type in the word I wish to use. If it appears underscored with a red line, I right-click on the word and a list of correct spelling options open up in a dialogue box.
If a speechecker is implemented, could this also include a method of highlighting correct punctuation usage?
Maybe it could be left to the individual as to whether or not they wish to use a spellchecker. After all, how would it be expected to cope with a post written in mobile text message format; 'teenspeak' for want of a better expression.

Re: Spell checker
I think it's more fun without a spell checker - if can give you a bit of a laugh, but usually you can still understand the post so it doesn't really matter that much.

Re: Spell checker
I dont think its really needed as no one spells that bed that we don't know what they are trying to say!
Also im a lazy typer and like to shorten words eg: tomoro, b4,ne1, u no that kind of thing.

Yes, I sort of agree shortstuff but for those educated in the 60's or earlier, grammar and spelling was paramount and to be unable to spell would mean a lower grade in exams "C.S.E's" "O" Levels and "A" Levels. It would even affect subjects like Science or History. Presentation was the key to good results as much as knowing the subject.
This is why us "old'uns" tend to shake our heads at the modern form of "short-hand." (which originally came about in the early days of text messaging when a message could only contain a certain amount of letters or spaces.)
I am certainly not perfect but can usually get most spelling right but just occasionally, a word crops up that baffles me and I have to break away from the Accy web to find the correct spelling elsewhere on the net. I specify the word that I need to know but rarely use the option to check the entire e-mail or letter with spellcheck if it is incorporated in the program, but......... On the Hyndburnlife site, they DO have a spell check but without the option of choosing the specified word. While posting a comment on there in reply to Bagpuss, the first suggestion it came up with was to change "Bagpuss" to ................."Anguses!!" I was laughing too much to complete the comments so cut the post short.
So for me, a spellcheck would be very welcome...but only if I can select the word that needs editing
Hi Anguses

Re: Spell checker
there are times that my brain goes into overdrive with words to type out, that is fine till my fingers try to keep up and i end up making silly speeling mistakes plus it very rare that i proof read what am posting so a spell check would help me for sure

Re: Spell checker
I added one some time after this thread, there is mention of it elsewhere. It worked quite well. But I removed it and not 1 person noticed. It was removed approx 4 months ago and this is the first mention of a spell check since (by the way, please note the date of this thread).
So it has been added, nobody used it, nobody noticed when it went, it wont be coming back.

I used it. Granted I only used it a couple of times and then after that I couldn't be bothered. It's easier to shout across to Busman "Oi, how do you spell..............?" or leave it when he's out and just have him laugh at my mistakes when he logs on later.

Re: Spell checker
How about automatically changing "teh" to "the"? Not mentioning anyone in particular but it does appear to be a very common mistake.
