Re: Spell checker!!!!

Consider it done. But you only get access to it from the main Post Reply page or when creating a new thread...
Personally, I'll never use the thing, I prefer to just make mistakes and be myself!

Re: Spell checker!!!!

An option is to type it in Word and cut and paste into the thread.

I have to do this on one forum as I keep getting script errors

Re: Spell checker!!!!

It is only available with the full editor... ie if you click on the Post Reply icon. It is not available for the quick reply box because if your only writing a sentence or two, surely it is easier to check your spelling yourself??

Anyway, in the full editor there is now a button which says SpellCheck next to the post and preview buttons. It is pretty self explanatory from then on...

I think it started in the 80's? P.C. schools were told to teach spelling "as it sounds" as opposed to the correct spelling. I believe that teaching methods are now reverting back to the "old" ways but for at least one generation, the damage has been done!

Likewise calculators, for a period in the 80's, it was acceptable to take a calculater into an exam but I believe that now, they have to forgo electronics. Am I right?

In my day.......Ouch! It wasn't good enough to come up with the right answer, you had to show the examiner HOW you arrived at the answer by putting your calculations on the exam paper. This seems unimportant nowadays

Re: Spell checker!!!!

That depends on which exam you are taking.

If you get the answer wrong you can salvage some of the points lost by showing the examiner how you got to the answer. If the steps themselves were correct, you would lose far less marks by showing the process rather than by just giving the answer.

Does that make sense? :engsmil:

Not at all. An exam is an exam! You don't talk or consult, just hand your papers in at the end of 90 mins.......Can you argue the toss with the examiner now??

Re: Spell checker!!!!

It makes sense to me.

If the answer to a question was "42" and I put "40" it would simply be WRONG.

But if I'd shown how I arrived at the answer of "40" and all the steps taken were correct but I'd simply made a small addition or subtraction error at the last stage for example then it wouldn't be as wrong and I would receive marks for showing that I knew how to work out the answer.

This is why it makes more sense to have all the thought processes etc taken into consideration and not just simply the final answer - and why using your brain is preferable to using a calculator.

I recall one of the comments made on my end of term exam paper by my maths teacher:

" ......... would be a brilliant mathematician if only she could ever learn to add up"
