Timing

I have to say that since the new format came in, I had not noticed too much difference when I usually logged on. However, since most of the times I am logging on from the office (usually at the end of a very hard day, but yes, Mick, sometimes at lunchtime or what passes for it!) access is reasonably quick, although sometimes there may be a slight delay.

At the office we have a fully networked system with an external server, serviced by an external IT company. Within the firm some have IT privileges, others do not. I, not by virtue of my high status, but simply my virtue of knowing how to use the system properly(!) have full IT privileges - except on those lovely occasions where the firewall is updated and I can't get anything until I disable security!

HOWEVER, I am now using our home PC, only just over a year old, Windows XP (Home) which I must admit they would never have sold to me but David got it (well, he did pay for it), and I have to say that the page changeover time is so SLOW. I do appreciate that we are now set up to expect almost instantaneous response, but it does seem slow compared to other downloaded pages (except they are trying to sell us something!). Is this just due to my office connection using the server, or is there another reason? If not, fine, but not fair. If I can do something about making access faster, - DO TELL!

Re: Timing

It may as I do have a cacheing proxy in place. Basically this stores stuff locally so for example the images aren't downloaded from Roys server but are served by the proxy server. This speeds up teh pages as there is no downloading required.

It makes quite a bit of difference. Also soem browsers are quicker than others. I use Konqueror for most sites but if I want a faster experience I use a very lightweight one called Dillo. It doesn't have all teh bells etc but it absolutely flies!

Re: Timing

Can you use those with Windows, or is that reserved especially for Linux users?

Re: Timing

The browsers are Linux specific at the moment. Dillo may be compiled for windows if you know what you are doing as its open source so freely available.

Cacheing proxies are available for windows. There is a 3 user demo(no time limit) here

http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/pr...r-download.htm

For people on dialup these can make a substantial increase in speed of pages loading.

Re: Timing

I am on a 1mb connection here, so it doesn't affect me too much.

Tried to get 2mb, but the line isn't big enough to support it. Odd, as I live less than 2 miles from the town centre

Re: Timing

Pendy, is your home pc connecting via dial up or broadband? If you are going from broadband at your office to dial up at home then you will certainly see a major difference in site loading times.
Generally speaking though the site should be performing fine as the server is not heavily loaded and we are on an excellent network.
If anyone is using dial up and wants to speed up browsing then you can use the Mobile version of accyweb by selecting it from the box at the bottom left of every page or by clicking this link http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/?styleid=10 This gets rid of all images and complicated layouts and should be lightning fast
