I knew the 3 Vaughn brothers - Edward (my age - same class at primary school), David (later owned the big toy shop on Church St Accy) - Donald - vaguely remember him.
Anyone know what happened to Edward? Did hear years ago that he qualified as a doc.

I think I remember that Edward was a doctor ... and that's the route Donald went too ... he did his university in London; their dad was a lawyer, I believe. Donald was in my year at Accy Grammar; so he must be in his early 60s now. Considering the amount we drank, and Donald was a sterling drinker, he probably specialized in diseases of the liver

I knew Donald quite well Eric, he used to mate out with a guy called Billy Walmsley, who's mother had the hair dressers opposite the Town Hall, another chap called John Marsden, John went into the Marchant Navy, he now lives on Fairfield Street, and is a regular in Ossy Con. Brian MaCandrew was another of the crew. Billy Walmsley now lives in East Anglia, near Grea Yarmouth, He's a Dentist, that is if he hasn't retired now, they are all around my age 61 or 62

Re: accy pubs

There is a list of pubs in existance in 1898 on page7 of 'An accrington Mixture' which I edited & published in 1995. I don't recall where I got the information, but with the exception of the Pickup Arms, I believe the information as to locations is correct. It doesn't list clubs. Because I am not competetent on the computer, I cannot email copies, but a PM bearing your email and/or postal address will get you a copy, as it will force me to learn how to send pics. It doesn't incl;ude clubs, but I have detaails of the
clubs in existance in 1938. They boasted 7,000 members:-

King St WMC...Stephenson memorial WMC...Globe Bowling & Billiard...Accrington District Club...Burnley rd Subscription Bowling Green...Central conservative...Canine WMC...Spring Hill Bowling & WMC...Dyers' & Finishers' WMC...Poplar WMC...Central WMC...Old Band Club...Baxenden WMC...Sydney st WMC...Baxenden Conservative...Discharged & Demobilised Sailors' & Soldiers' Memorial Club...Willopw Mount WMC...Masonic Association...Grafton recretaion...Baxenden & District Golf...Amalgamated Engineering Union (A.E.U.) Club...Marlborough WMC...Huncoat WMC...Green Haworth WMC...Bold St...central Catholic...Accrington Transport & Social

I don't know where some of these were.

Can anyone tell me when Bash Con Club opened. Is it still going? Was the upstairs domestric quarters at one time?

Re: accy pubs

Does the Pioneer Working Men's Club not appear because it is in Church?
It still operates now when most others have closed

Holy faeces .... you knew Wham ... and Johnny Marsden .... it is indeed a small world .... do the names Ray Barker, Sid Wright, Ian Wade ring a bell?

I've got dogs to walk, cats to feed, and grass to cut .... I'll PM you later if that's ok.

John Marsden is my cousin.
His mum, my godmother Margaret, died recently.
