Having lived in the country for 18 years I got very good at working out what species of poo was being spread

But we also had haymaking and harvest and wet grass after rain.

Now I live a few yards from the sea and I can honestly say I rarely smell it. Maybe because there's no water around for a lot of the time... but when we do get a scent it's more like seaweed than sea air.

The smell I really associate with the sea is the smell of diesel as one boards a ferry or cruise ship about to set off across the Channel or North Sea or wherever... I find that very evocative. Also fish from boats in a small harbour - perhaps because I was brought up with the smell of fish as my grandad worked all his life on the fish market.

Haha wasn't a deliberate thing Cashy - but they do smell different. My other half just seemed to know - he'd stick his nose in the air and say oh they're spreading pig sh1t today or whatever.

Also we got very used to the smell of chicken poo, first of all we had our own flock of birds and some friends of ours used to run one of those big broiler houses where they fatten up chicks for the table. Every six weeks they would have a crop (yes it only takes that long to grow to eating size) and we would go and get a trailer load of muck to rot down for the garden. The smell of ammonia was very good for the old tubes!

Plus we had two goats so we had a large muck heap from their stable as well. Shifted many barrow loads of that stuff in my time!

No-one mentioned Tealeaf being nearly 110 then -seems today's the day. Accyweb's oldest and possibly the oldest man in the Nation...

If you'd actually seen Tealeaf he doesn't look a day under 130
