We inherited a cat when we moved here and it's surprising what our bin weighs and how full it is when you add cat litter to it every day. But litter from two rabbits AND 60-70 nappies- what do nappies cost now?
Why not go for washable nappies and use the exchange service-that's supposed to be cheaper.I must admit washing nappies wasn't the high point of my day.

I just felt a little out of touch with reality actually discussing nappies-haven't done that for a long while.But seriously the exchange system is worth checking out.
We still have the big bins here- how hairylee manages all that in a small bin I can't imagine-as I said one cat can fill a big bin.

If you use 2"-3" depth of Catsan absorbant white litter granules you dont need to change it more than once a week. The solids need to be removed daily with a pooper scooper, but the liquid is absorbed and does not begin to emit any smell until at least a weeks worth of urine eventually saturates most of the granules.

I don't have much sympathy with people who won't take the trouble to use terry nappies. My son never had nappy rash, and I coped with the frequent boiling of nappies, even when I returned to full time work when he was 13 months old.

When you say a big bin is it square ish in section? As in is the lid square? If so they are the normal bins. The big ones were the same width but half as long again from the handle to the front of the bin.

Yes I know I am talking rubbish as usual before someone mentions it

I found a picture that looks about right for the 3 bin sizes, the biggest one they stopped using because the bin wagon was breaking them if I remember correctly

Yes it is square-NORMAL?I can't imagine anything bigger that hasn't got 8 wheels and a 300HP truck to pull it! How much garden do they leave you?

I had a Baby Burco Boiler (in those days washing machines didn't have a boil wash setting).
The 'soil' was rinsed off using a toilet flush, then the nappy was placed in a bucket of water and Napisan (steriliser). Five or six nappies a day plus a 'doubled up' two at night = 56 a week max.(two or three laundering sessions a week)
..more than that isn't normal, and maybe 70 a week is a symptom of an over enthusiastic mum, or the child has a problem that needs medical attention.

The bit on compost bins actually started this year, not next year.

Did they not mention it to you ? Or maybe never got off the ground ? Will have to pay for it, but well worth it I would think.

'At present we can NOT collect any food stuffs, vegetable peelings or fruit waste from the kitchen in your green bin. However there is a new home compost bin scheme starting on 22nd March 2010 throughout Lancashire. Bins will be available to buy at a reasonable rate as part of this scheme and will be delivered to homes in Lancashire with full instructions on how to get started.

I did notice you said you had no room for a compost bin, but maybe they are not too large. Sorry, if you have have definintely ruled this out before. Must remember to read posts better.

sigh when will HBC catch up with the rest of the country and go back to weekly collections

even blackburn have abandoned the fortnightly collections as teh scheme simply dosnt work

Having room for one is ok but what if you dont have any use for the compost? I have had people tell me they tried it and have ended up with a compost bin full of stuff that is not breaking down.

Right ... have never done it so will bow to your knowledge.

What do you do with the waste from the pets at Rhyddings, presume that will be composted, as plenty of use for it ?
