and can you buy the actual plot/bit of land outright?
and whats the price of them?
and if anyone who still has one that they no longer use and would be willing to let me rent from them then let me know..

thanks
Allotments are in short supply in Clayton. Clayton prospects panel are trying to acquire a piece of land on Barnes St with a view to turn into allotment site. but slow progress at moment - funding needed etc. but should move along once funding aquired.
Word of warning with some of the newer council run sites (meadoway & Heys lane), the council were proposing increasing rents by a massive amount. dont quote me but eg is from £25 up to £200. making them unafordable for alot of holders.
The HBC allotment person is female - name's gone - leanne possibly ?
if you dont get any joy with the suggestions on here, you could consider contacting ian hodgson, prospects foundation. he's the community food growing co-ordinator and has lots of contacts. he's on leave at moment though. tel 01254 380244, email: [email protected]. fantastic guy & as mad as a bag of frogs

He is madder than that

Re: allotments: who has one? and how long did you wait for it?

If our council wants to pay more than just lip service to 'going green', they had better not raise allotment rents. They maintain allotment tracks, but otherwise there aren't great costs involved in providing them. Raising rents just discourages people from making the effort to cultivate.

Growing you own food is supposed to be good for the planet and provides better nutrition than the veg that is shipped long distances.

£200 per year = £2.85 per week
At that cost, people will say that it will be cheaper to buy supermarket veg.

Have Tesco complained to the council that veg sales are less than the national average in these parts?

Even 100 quid is a bit much for a piece of land, that would otherwise be lying fallow, Once it becomes allotment land, what do the council actually do, but look on it as another cash cow.

There used to be some lovely allotments in Clayton between St.Mary's church and school -we used to see all the chaps working on them when we came out of school in the afternoon (1970's). I wonder -are they still there?

That in my view is one of the daftest increases i have heard of, i just cannot concieve a P.B.less council would approve such n increase, surely not.

Re: allotments: who has one? and how long did you wait for it?

Hyndburn has problems with allotments. There is a massive waiting list and not enough allotments. Many are not used and at such a small amount of money people appear to pay each year in case they decide to use it.

How much do you pay a year to rent a garage? Mucher small than an allotment.

Anyone know what it costs the council to administer the allotments? If more money is being charged hopefully they will be able to provide more allotments and improve the access roads/paths to them. I know HBC have been going a lot of work on some of the allotments recently.

have no objection to n increase in the rents, but from a commonsense or fair perspective the percentage increase proposed is scandulous more so in these times, anyone unable to see that principle is either a tory or dim.

I agree the percentage is very high but I think allotments have been ignored and neglected for so long they were almost forgotten about until they became popular recently and the waiting lists grew.

The last administration started sorting things out and that work needs carrying on by the new administration.

Allotments should not cost the Council money.

Typical damned if you do damned if you dont comment

The waiting lists became big so the Council looked into it and put a plan into action. These things don't happen overnight or the new lot would have fixed Hyndburn by now

Whatever the reason no longer matters because Hyndburn has been saved from the evil Tories by the unable to do wrong Labour party.

Praise be to the Lord for sending the reds to save us
