Question Ancestry?

Im thinking of subscribing to it, to track my family tree.

You get 14 days free trial then ya can either pay for the year or monthly.

Has anyone been on this?, if so, is it worth the money, or should I just get the free trial and see for myself?

Re: Ancestry?

I would avoid it.- even the free trial would require debit/credit card detail.
An 'ancestry search site' once tried to debit my credit card and was spotted by my card provider who rang me check whether I had authorised the payment. dodgy
There are ways to do it yourself without paying others fees.

Re: Ancestry?

You can use it for nothing at the library. Have a look here: Lancashire library and information service

It may well be - my card provider didn't/wouldn't say which ancestry site had tried it on.

No I have no need to search for my ancestors- my cousin Michael Rothwell has already done it all.

Re: Ancestry?

Agree with Margaret, I tried £5 worth on a site once ... not sure if Ancestry .. and was given a certain amount of points, but for every question the point count was very high, and was soon absorbed before I got to the end of my quest. You would have to pay a fee for copies of birth/marriage/death certificates to see the full details i.e. if you have found the correct Jo Bloggs ... and it is so easy to carry on adding more money if you are not careful.

Did find quite a lot of information from this site though, particularly the free electoral register one, and ways of progressing through this. Library good place to start though.

There are quite a few Parochial records free of charge ... I looked at a Cornish one (from my mother's side), and threw up lots of info .. but you have to be vigilant ... kinda' gets you if you are not careful.

Re: Ancestry?

Researching your family ancestors is very addictive...and can be expensive too.
I think to get a Free trial on Ancestry, you have to give your credit card details and if you do not notify them thay you don't want to continue they debit the money from your account......when i looked at it you had to do the full year which was something like £70.......OK, it isn't a great amount of money but I wasn't sure at the time how much use I would get out of it.
Try the Births Marriages and deaths site.....lots of free info....and parish registers are also a good form of reference too.

Panther

I use the computers at Accrington Library every day in Ancestry, searching for WWI soldiers, its FREE, don't have to subscribe or buy the records, just down load to a memory stick, Did all my wifes genealogy back to 1841, on both sinister & distaff sides for free, even found my great grandfather who I couldn't find before, even after joining a one name society.

Call in Accy Library any day between 12 & 2 and I'l show you what to do, ask the local studies if Im in.

Re: Ancestry?

I've had mixed issues with Ancestry, I did the free trial and after 12 months received amn e mail saying it was due for renewal and my credit card would be debitted, I did send an e mail to say I didn't wish for it to be renewed. Unfortunately I changed my ISP and got a new PC and couldn't prove I'd sentthe e mail.

I wrote to my credait card provider to request a refund but they were less than helpul and i didn't get anywhere

the next renewal came through this year which initillay came out of my credit card however I did contact the company direct and they arrangd a refund

Thats the only trouble buying things on line by credit card, the same thing applies to Time Life and their record collections, they keep asking for your credit card and they send you an extra CD if you phone a number. DON'T, once they've got your card they keep sending you CDs on approval, and trying to get rid is like trying to get chewing gum from the bottom of your shoe

My mum uses that site, she would recommended ancestry.com/ancestry.co.uk. However she spends hours on it.
