Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

Been having health issues as of late. Feeling faint or dizzy every now and again and often bouts of short term memory loss. The faintness sometimes feels like anxiety. I Feel miserable lots of the time. I never thought much of the memory loss thing but my mate kept pointing out that I am always saying about stuff that I had forgot to do.

So I went to the doctors and I was ordered to have blood tests and a ECG. Results came in via post yesterday along with a prescription for VitD tabs. It said I had to take 15 capsules in one day or 5 a day for 5 days(I got 15 caps so figure that one out??) I figure most people get all the D they need from the sun?. Coincidental my friend says I always seem happier during the summer.

So I am just after any opinions/experiences from anybody that has this problem with VitaminD? And could the winters really be making me depressed and anxious?

Re: Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

I have recently been in talks regarding Vit D supplements for school children. Studies are showing that there is a marked increase in rickets in some cohorts of children. I have seen some of the symptoms in some children myself.

You may also suffer from Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD). I do believe there is a type of phototherapy lamp that sufferers use in the winter months.

Hope this helps and hope you soon feel better.

I rarely go out, in sun or otherwise, so I take vit D3 every day.
I had a S A D lamp at one time but it didn't make any noticeable difference to 'winter blues'.

Unfortunately food production methods nowadays provide food which is less nutritious than it used to be. Most people are deficient in some essential nutrients.

Re: Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

I have seasonal affective disorder........my energy levels and mood are both low during the dark months. I try to get out into the daylight every day......saying that the last couple of very snowy winters I was much better.......can only assume it was due to the light reflecting property of snow.

I think the value of vitamin D has been much under-estimated. I think if people were checked for their vit D, a lot of people would be found to have low levels.
It is recommended that people try to get out in the sun with bare face and bare arms for 20 minutes per day....this would give you the vit D you needed.

I think this is very true.......I know doctors say that if you take a varied diet then supplements are a waste of money.....I don't think they take into consideration that food production methods have changed and food may not be carying as many vits as they think.

Rob, I have PM'd you some info about vit B complex as well......it may be that you have low vit B levels too....the symptoms you mention would lead me to think that.

Re: Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

I live in a very sunny land and from May onwards I'm out in the sun a lot but last year I had a vit D deficiency!
I have been prescribed 2 tabs a day(400 units) of D3.
For us ladies , it also helps the calcium from our food to be absorbed more easily and is much better than taking Calcium supplements. It is best to have a blood test first though to see what levels actually are.

His levels must be low(he had a blood test) as they have sent him a script for a Vit D supplement.

Re: Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

Funnily enough, a friend of mine in Australia has recently been diagnosed with Vit D deficiency. It appears that is is happening more often to people in sunnier climes because of the wearing of strong sun creams. My mate plasters herself in sun block whenever she ventures out. The fear of skin cancer has, in many cases in Australia, prompted people to cover up or use sun block. This has led to an increase in Vit D deficiency.
The recommendation is now bare arms and face for 10-15 mins per day with no sun cream, I believe.

I also think that MR is right about the food. I'm bloody sure it's not as nutritious, some of it certainly tastes different.....

I'm on Vitamin D tabs every day, the sun doesn't help me because I have to keep out of it for obvious reasons, I take them due to Osteoporosis

Re: Anybody have Vitamin D deficiency ?

Carlson Labs, Super Daily D3, 2000 IU, 0.38 fl oz (11 ml) - iHerb.com

I struggle swallowing pills, so most of my supplements are in liquid form.
I import my VitD3 from iherb California - £7.62

A taxi to and from my doc would cost me that much, and I get most of my supplements from them.

They often have free airmail offers, and if you are careful to limit the weight and total cost of each order you can avoid VAT and import duty.
