It's a pop, curry and kebab festival which is paid for by secret donations going through the national Lottery. They're very common up in Lancashire.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Mela is a Sanskrit word meaning get together. In modern usage in the United Kingdom it has become a term for a multicultural (though mainly Asian) festival incorporating music, dance, food and other aspects of British Asian culture in the UK.

Melas regularly are held in larger towns in the UK, especially in areas with large ethnic minority populations. They are often considered important as a way of improving relations between the "indigenous" (white) UK population and the Asian population. The Melas began in the nineteen nineties.

Public money is sometimes available for these festivals. They have also been seen as a way of ensuring that festivals are available for the whole population. (The Arts Council produced a study on this examining eleven festivals in the Leicester region).

I'd like to know when, because I'm by leicester and I've never heard of a mela.
so basically it's a word for carnival bought in to use by non whites because our word carnival or festival isn't good enough. A so called multicultural word.
Why don't you just call it what it's always been called.

Well you can't call it a P**s-up because no alcohol is allowed within a mile of the place...it's offensive to certain minorities. Meanwhile, other minorities can't get in - mind you, the Gays have their own lottery funded bash and the Jews are probably too busy raising war bond money. As for the feminists - forget it

We went through all this lot last year at this time, and I'm certain we had a solemn promise that there would be no more Accy Meles.

You sure Uncle Mick ? Haven had booked them for the 3rd August and can't find any reference to him passing away on the internet or having to pay 'The Ferryman' . There again, lots of these sites are out of date.

Well unless he's playing a joint set with Derek Acorah I think he's alive and well because he's playing Burnley Mechanics too!

There was no promise that there wouldn't be a Mela this year. Hyndburn couldn't find funding for one so we didn't think we'd be able to fund it but fortunately we have.

For anyone who isn't aware of the history here - Tealeaf doesn't like the idea of a community festival, he thinks we spending money on the wrong sort of people.

Btw - it's a Mela and Community Festival - last year it's was a really good mix of Asian and white who came and they all partied together without any bother.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

So, my critique on Haven's Hopton Holiday Village near Great Yarmouth.

We went to the pleasure beach at Great Yarmouth, Pettitts Animal Farm and Pleasure Wood Hills, plus saw the sand sculpture festival on Great Yarmouth beach, played crazy golf and spent a lot of time on the campsite enjoying the facilities, also spent a couple of days on the beach.

We won the bumper prize draw one evening plus the wildest, wackiest table competition one night. Maddie also won a competition one day and got to lead the animal parade around the room, Zack entered the fancy dress competition but didn't win. We joined in most of the morning activities and all of the evening ones. The site was totally geared up for kids and they had a fantastic time.

All in all, a really good holiday - I would definitely book with Haven holidays again whilst the kids are young - but would choose a different campsite next year simply for variety.

Great Yarmouth had plenty of things to do and I don't think we really spent enough time exploring but we never ran out of things to do.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Glad you had a good holiday.

So elequently described, they will probably have you all on the cover of next year's brochure.

Should we be looking for you in a bikini on the cover or a one piece?

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Gayle, I am glad you had a good holiday in Norfolk. I quite like the mix of entertainment at Haven, it is there if you want it, but you can always find lots of other things to do. I have just got back from a holiday to France. I went with my duhter and her family. We stayed at a Haven Europe campsite in St jean de Monts (thats in the Vendee). I can really recommend the area to anyone thinking of going. The French people were very helpful the beaches were great and food and drink was cheaper than in UK, (except in the bar onsite - which was English prices).
