Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Thinking of going on a holiday later in the year to Great Yarmouth - went once when I was about 12 - anyone know anything good about it, you know - things to do, things to see, etc.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

I had relatives there, one of my cousins was born and raised there, and it always seemed a pleasant enough place. There was a sort of Pleasure Beach on the sea-front, it was about on a par with Southport's, and the beaches were quite nice. There was lovely (flat) countryside inland too and some lovely little villages.

I haven't been for 45 years (relations moved to Essex) so I have no idea how much it's changed. Anyway, it's worth a visit just to hear the fabulous Norfolk accent.

Sounds promising but 45 year old information might not quite be right....

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Hi Gayle, i live 12 miles from Great Yarmouth and go there at least once a week. Half the people i know like Yarmouth-the other half think its awful.Good points-pleasurebeach,time +tide museum, trips to see seals off scroby sands, sealife centre, racecourse, greyhound racing, plenty of wildlife parks/zoos close by,take a boat on broads.bad points too many assylum seekers.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Now you see that's what I was looking for folks. With a name like Norwich Stanley I wouldn't have expected anything less. Thank you for your help, that sounds ok.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Gayle, I went a couple of times in my youth with mates (you can probably guess who) but don't remember a great deal about it apart from we met Keith Chegwin in a nightclub and saw a cabaret in the Windmill theatre (I think) starring Lennie Bennett (anyone remember him?) Freddie Starr and Lisa Stansfield before anyone had heard of her. The one thing that does stick in my memory was we had a really good time although this may have been down to the people I was with, like I said it was a long time ago. Oh and there was some go karts.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

Been many times on business Gayle, mainly in the Winter, however, did go once in the summer and the beach is lovely and think has the right mixture of entertainment for the kids, a little, but not too much that will drain your purse.

A mix of good restaurants and night life ... good port too which is interesting and decent shopping. Yes, quite nice.

Problem is Norfolk so bloody flat ..road from Norwich to Yarmouth tedious.
Take ya' about 5 and half hours from Ossie.

I think definitely worth a visit though as different type of surrounding area to what we are used to .. better than most North West resorts.

Don't know what type of accommmodation you would be seeking, but decent caravan site as you are entering the town.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

We had a couple of holidays touring the broads during the nineties and called into Great Yarmouth on both occasions. I remember a lovely beach and an excellent theme park.

Most of the pubs etc seem to be named from the Charles Dickens book 'David Copperfield' and I recall a really rude barman in Peggoty's.

I think it would be a good holiday for children.

Re: Anyone ever been to Great Yarmouth?

I went on holiday there in 2000, we stayed at Seashore (Haven), we enjoyed it so much we booked for the following year whilst we were there. The beach was good, the pleasure beach is on a par with Southport (as someone else said earlier). We had our granchildren with us (at the time they were 6 and 8), and there was lots for them to see and do, without it costing the earth. I know the countryside is flat but there are lots of lovely little villages. When we went in 2001 we hired a boat for the day on the Broads which we all enjoyed. I am sure your children would love it there.
