Arch/Tower in Rhyddings Park

just been browsing through some old pics in the gallery and there was a few of the Arch/tower in Rhyddings park, i remember playing in, around and up the side of it when i was a kid.... what is the history behind this arch/tower? does anyone know?

I think it was a folly in the gardens of the old house. I don't remember the big house which I think was where the top bowling green was, but have spent many hours playing in there when we lived on Laburnum Drive in the early 70's.
I had my first kiss in the playground there (on top of the slide) - that wasn't you was it? Of course it wasn't, she moved away years ago. I wonder where HB is now?

Ah the memories come flodding back.
I think there is another thread on here about this very subject.

its a lovely park, one of the best i've seen in east lancs for a long time, i wonder if it ever had a wall attached to it or it was just built like that?

The Folly was apparently built around 1870.

It was built to look like a romantic ruin, even when it was brand new.

i think its lovely, was looking at a thread in the archives last night, ossygobbin has some beautiful pics on there of the park

Ya flashy Mike has some great picks, I often spend an hour just going through his own site, as for the arch it brings back a lot of memories of my youth which I won't be describing on Accy Web thank you

i've just been down the library and got a few books on 'old accy' got one of the books co-wrote by Bob Dobson so i shall be flicking through those trying to look like i can read

i saved it to my favourites too, i've just read two of the books i got from the library today, the pics in them are excellent, one was by Garth Dawson and the other by Frank Watson and Bob Dobson, they really impressed me
