Unhappy bad luck? or just the way it is?

i have been planning a permanent move over from virginia usa and brought my son over for a temp visit for the month of feb. since i love the place i was hoping he would too. one sunday afternoon about 3pm i asked him if he wanted to walk with me to the haworth gallery. it had snowed the day before and i wanted to take some pics. as we were leaving the gallery while walking on the side of the road a car was coming towards us. as it saw us it sped up until it was doing between 65 and 70 mph and was coming right for us, on purpose. 5 kids in the car and missed us by a few inches. it wasn't until it was halfway down the street that i realized i had a camera and took a pic of it. it was a blue clio. if it was an older couple walking that afternoon they would have died from a heart attack. it was that scary.

i just kind of shrugged it off and just took it as bad luck.

a few days later it warmed up a little and my son said he was walking to the skate park in town. when i heard the door open about 20 mins later i knew something had happened. it was 3pm and just as he got near the skate park some hit him in the head with a snow ball. he turned and 6 teens jumped him, hitting him in the back of the head with something and stomped him.

no one i spoke to about it was surprised, no one was shocked, like it happens all the time. there were lots of other kids and other people walking by and on the street but no one stopped to help him. i don't understand that.

i have traveled a lot and i have been to big cities all over the usa. i have heard people in the uk and in australia say how dangerous the usa is. how there are guns and killings and they talk about it like they would about a cowboy movie....but i KNOW that if that happened in my town and in any of the towns i've lived in in the usa people would have stopped those 6 punks from beating one kid. no doubt about it. it has nothing to do with guns, it has to do with respect and order and knowing right from wrong.

i don't care how little i am, IF i was there with him that day i would have fought them tooth and nail to help him....whether it was my son or yours...or your mother or father. (of course i would have probably been beaten worse than he was but i would have taken at least one down with me).

but seriously IS that normal here? do you have to be afraid just walking home from town or through the park in the middle of the afternoon?

after coming here probably 25 times in the last 5 years for the first time i am seriously rethinking the move. and for the first time in my life i was scared of a place.

sadly yes well i would say extreemly cautious infact in some areas its not even safe to let your kid go to teh corner shop alone and thats in teh so called posher areas.

if you do decide to move here have a good backup plan so that you can easily go back

like i said theres plenty of decent folk around but sadly theres also a lot of scum as you have experienced yourself

Sorry to hear about your misfortune day, but it's getting really bad round Accy especially with the boy racers........

Did you by any chance get the reg of the clio? I know a young lad who lives round there who drives a blue clio, could be him. If you got it could you pm me and I will have a word with his parents.

I'm really sorry to hear what has happened to you.

I've travelled all over the world, and of course you do need to be cautious in unfamilar places, but sadly the only place I was the victim of an unprovoked attack was here, when I foolishly decided to walk home from Accy after a night out, when I was up from London for the weekend.

Saying that, there are idiots everywhere, and on the whole the good folk of this area far outweigh the few that are bad.

I hope you decide to stay, and don't let a small minority put you off the rest of us.

Re: bad luck? or just the way it is?

hi day, sorry to hear of the misfortune of the days events, but i really dont understand why the rest of you are saying these things,, accrngton isnt that bad you do get the odd group of lads like that and i can tell you now i doubt they were all clean when they did that to your poor lad they more than likely had taken something or even drank themselves stupid, and the car situation i understand are alot of boy racers in accrington but they will get what's coming to them in due time when their brakes fail and they are going too fast.

Accrington isnt all that bad at all,, id like to know why garinda, lynx n accyman are still in accrington if your making it out to be such a bad place. iv lived here 19 years and think its a good place, not the best but what towns perfect. you get your idiots in this town just like you do in every town no doubt other places like london are worse if that. there are nice people in accrington and if you stay you will meet them to me i think it was all abit of bad luck and if you did stay it would get better but that choice is definatly entirely yours xx

Er...in my defence.

I lived in London for many years, as well as Liverpool, and Glasgow, and besides that I've travelled all over the world. From some of the biggest cities on our planet, to some of it's poorest hell holes.

The only time I was ever attacked, was whilst walking home from a night out in Accrington, and it was totally unprovoked.

I didn't say Accrington is more dangerous, or indeed safer, than anywhere else. I was just reporting factually my experience.

Accrington is a fine town, with even finer people. Which is one reason I decided to move back to the area, after spending more than half of my life away.

Though I don't actually live in Accy.

The only draw back I've found since moving back, are some of the people who've have moved here, in the last nineteen years or so. They add two and two together, and amazingly make five, and totally get the wrong end of the stick.

accrington is a good place, every town has there idiots and i personally think it was just a day of bad luck x

My dear Sassy, Rindy wasn't as you say "making a blow at you!" it is just his subtle way of saying please don't jump to conclusions until you have thoroughly grasped the context of the comments made.

Should he decide to have a proper go at you, you would be well aware of the acidic tone & cutting depths of his retorts as some on here have found to their cost & chagrin (I include myself in those foolish enough to have crossed him at various times). Still, it's all part of growing up & being British.

Lifes learning curve can be nice & gentle or painfully steep depending on how you accept things, so enjoy your time on the forum.

Re: bad luck? or just the way it is?

Having lived in quite a few towns, plus other countries, can say in my opinion accy aint bad really, majority of folk are great, yes there's scumbags, but aint there anywhere, i returned 10 yrs back, and have never regretted it, have also met some great people on here, so my advice is don't let a few ******* put ya off.
