Bee Keeping

Hi All,

Just wondered if anyone kept bee's? My Dad wants a Bee Hive for his allotment and wondered if anyone knew of the best place to get one and any tips?

Thanks

It is rumoured, (and I know this to be true 'cos I just made it up), that MargeretR keeps all her bees in her bonnet.

Re: Bee Keeping

I haven't but did look into it and it did appear a heck of a lot more work than it appears at first. If you google about there is a local group ( Blackburn IIRC) that offered more help.

Setting up as a Bee Keeper or Apiarist is a bit expensive these days, you don't just get a beehive and thats it, they need looking after, at least an hour a day, and special care in winter.
Best to see if there is a local Apiarist group in your area and join that, he might get some cheap tackle of them or when he see's whats involved he might change his mind.

Ah Yes, the starter kit, that is 1 queen bee & a drone, would you like them wrapped?

That basic starter kit is just for a queen and a few bees, you will need a hive to put them in and you won't get that in with your 22.99.

You will need a bee suit & gloves, a smoker to calm the bees etc etc.
Either join a Apiarist society or get some books from the library, you just don't get some bees and away you go. The bees will arrive in a special container with enough food for 4 days.
Any way its the wrong time of year to start a new colony, they won't have enough stores to over winter. Honey Bees are a protected species and only bee keepers are allowed to handle them.
There is a goverment body that inspects bee hives every 3 years, and you need to comply or lose your bees. Mine were inspected regularly when I kept bees
