Would it be a lady called Jean Hampson, husband name of Neville? I know they had a chippy on Abbey Street, could it have been that one?

It was on that part of Abbey St, facing Palmer Rileys Electrics,
it will now be under the first set of pumps nearest to Plantation St.
The owners did live somewhere up Manchester Rd, when the firemans strike was on in the 1970's, he would pull up on his way home, and give the lads on the picket loads of fish & chips.
Retlaw.

Hard to choose between Abbey Friar, the one at West End on main road and Clayton Street Harwood. Someone choosing York St was a surprise to me. To me that's one of the worst

Jean's a widow now, she turned 80 this year. She lives on Queens Road West opposite St Christophers. She's supposed best friends with my elderly cousin who lives round the corner, though they fall out all the time like a couple of schoolgirls. It makes me laugh!

Re: best chippy ?????
I'm sure Jean and Neville ran the chippy on Marsden Street before they moved to Abbey Street.

used to be good a long time ago then it was asian owned for a while with a white couple running it and they did pale soggy chips with green streaks from the potato been bad. Then it got good again but i forget the womans name but he husband was trevor with the chippy advertised down the side of his saburu car. Then its been a chineese for a few years but never been in
clayton street chippy in harwood was fantastic the last time i went but that was about 2 years ago and was the same people who had it 10 years ago. They make their own pies and puddings and i would often travel from accy to harwood for their food especially the gravy which was also made from scratch

Re: best chippy ?????
It was most certainly one of the best, in the past. Did they change hands at some point?. It was awarded best chippy at some point too. It always seemed to be a good chippy even when I was at school hehe. But been a few times lately and been disappointed.
