Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
I live in a terraced house, there used to be railing around the front, which were apparently removed by the council during the war, for re use etc.
I overheard someone say that you can claim money back for this, Is this true?? If so how??

I think you have to apply to the MoD for a surplus field cannon but it has to be the one your railings were melted down for. When you have identified and acquired it, wheel it along to your nearest MoD Ordnance depot and they'll give you the 3/11d your railings were worth in 1939.

Like it Westender
Our parents made sacrifices for the war effort to defend us - railings were just one of the small sacrifices - a bit petty now to try for compensation

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
I would think you'd have to be the original owner at the time the railings were removed to even have a sniff of any compo.

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
Rumour has it that all the metal collected wasn’t actually used to make weapons. It was just a ploy to make the public feel like they were doing something to contribute to the war effort.

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
When I was a very small child I asked my mum what the little holes in the front garden wall were for. She said there used to be iron railings and they had taken them away to "build aeroplanes". It was many years before I came to doubt the viability of a cast iron aeroplane.

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
You would probably be made to get rid of them these days anyway as they would be deemed dangerous so think of it that they did you a favour! lol

I think the thing is GG we now live in the age of compensation, when anything goes wrong or anything doesn't seem right the first question people ask is can I claim. It all start a few years ago when it showed that kid (I think he was caled Damian Swan) fell off that swing, and people have been looking for a quick buck ever since.

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
I remember the little nubs of the cast iron railings on the low wall that surrounded Mercer Park in Clayton ... and I remember seeing photos (long since vanished unfortunately) of the railings.

Re: Can u claim for iron railings taken during the war
I've got a slate off.
I bet it was loosened when the Germans bombed Ossy, as a bomb fell only half a mile from my house.
Would I apply for compensation directly from the German government, or will I have to go through the E.E.C.?

I do wish you'd phrase things better Rindi, it was only when I read your post a second time that I realised you were talking about your house
