What's your price range?
When my son was 5 it was mostly action man, (which 7 years later is all in the loft! - must clear out!).

scalectrix but they are a bit pricey , i have made the mistake of buying those cheaper ones and they dont last 5 mins so better of buying scaletrix and getting somthing that will last

show him some toys from woolworths or argos catalogue and see what he likes then you have to narrow it down cause he will prob pick something from every page

Think the best pressie I ever bought my son was the Brio wooden train tracks, they are sturdy and imaginative .. not some wind-up thingy that just goes around and around. You can buy a basic set (I know not exactly cheap) and add to it as the year's go along. Also no little bits that get all over the house.

Used to get them at Early Learning, but other stores do them too.

Take a look

He and his friends had years of fun out of this; and now he is a Planner involved in Transport at the moment.. so maybe was just early signs of what was to come ...
