Cows in Accrington
I have an ancestor who was a cattle drover.
He married a lass who lived in Swan Hotel and settled in Hyndburn road.
Can someone tell me where the nearest cattle market was in Accrington, and were there any cattle troughs outside the Swan Hotel in Abbey Street ?
Thanks.

Re: Cows in Accrington
OK.....I'm not aware of the location any cattle market in Accrington (although I'm sure there must have been a livestock market of some sorts, even informal). However, there wwas a slaughterhouse in the town and this was located on Hyndburn Road close to where the railway viaduct is. The slaughterhouse closed about 15 years ago - there is now a MacDonalds on the site.
As regards Hyndburn, there are & have been relatively few residential buildings along the road. There were a small number of cottages, however, on the opposite side of Hynburn Road, just prior to the slaughterhouse....it's possible your ancestor lived in one of these. If you look under Accy Photos and scroll back a few months you'll find one of Atarah's excellent postings with picture which refers to a murder in these cottages on Hyndburn Road - about 1905!

Re: Cows in Accrington
I was born in 1952 in Adelaide Street and I can remember cattle being moved regularly from the farm on Sandy Lane where Ascot Way is now to the slaughterhouse on Hyndburn Road. This was done by men and dogs, and many a time we used to meet a pair of horns in our lobby coming in as we were going out, we could leave the front door open in those days and the only unwanted visitors were cattle, maybe your ancestor was one of those men.

Re: Cows in Accrington
My ancestor and his family lived in Carleton In Craven, Yorkshire.
I am not sure if he drove cattle all that way from his family's farm, or if cattle drovers were hired by local farmers.
What about local butcher's ?
I have a Lawrence Kenyon Sutcliffe, died 1953 lived College Street and a Jesse Sudall died 1944 in Queens Road but lived 31 Plantation Street for large part of his life.
Anybody know anything about these local people or where their shops might have been ?

Isn't there a small row of terraces near where the KFC is now?

Cows in Accrington
Haha, not as daft as some may think. Cattle used to weave their way down from the hills above sandy lane to the abbattoirs down black abbey street which belonged to the Co-Op (passing The Swan pub of course on their way!) I dont know whether these abbattoirs were before or after Hyndburn Road, but could have been at a similar time.
They did also have cattle fairs in Abbey Street each April and August. The cattle were paraded along the street and sheep and pigs were penned in front of the Red Lion, The Swan and the Oak Tree
WHAT SURNAMES ARE YOU AFTER, I MIGHT JUST BE ABLE TO HELP YOU HERE
Also, re the name Sudall, I believe the small bit of garden, near the end of Queens Road West (near what used to be the sweet shop end) was given to the town by a Sudall. Do you know anything about this?

Kenyon family
This of course is an old Accrington connected name (we had Kenyon Street, remember?)
There used to be an old Toll House in Accrington, a round shaped building, top of Grange Lane and Manchester Road. This old building, built 1792, after being abandoned was used as a grocery business by the KENYON family. Maybe rellies of yours?

Re: Cows in Accrington
I have been told that there used to be cattle pens at the back of Paxton Street. These pens were used for the storing of cattle waiting to be transported by train
