Do we turn on the GAS?

So according to the drill company there is enough gas under the West Lancs coastal area to supply the whole of the UK for 66 years! Or the whole of the world for two years. They may be exaggerting a little(perhaps it's only 50/40/30/20 years?) but there's a lot of it!
Do we go for it or do we leave it there just for chance we get the occasional earth tremor? Bearing in mind that even MargaretR's sources say the earthquake connection is to the disposal wells, not the gas wells. And this company will not dispose of the waste water in wells, they will process it.
The North Sea is running out, we will rely on Russia(? could we?), Algeria, the Middle East etc-not one reliable supply amongst them and most vunerable to gas pipes running through different countries.
Wind? Not on a windless day. Nuclear? Not available in quantity for a long while yet.Coal-unacceptable and unavailabe since we shut the mines.
Gas power may not be the Greenest option but it's cleaner than coal or oil,safer than nuclear and it doesn't depend on the weather.
We have a choice but can we REALLY afford to say no?
My opinion is go for it, what do you think?

Do I believe what this company are telling us? Have they got an ulterior motive for telling us something which sounds so attractive?
Is this gas going to be cheaper than what we are getting fleeced for now?
Is it going to be safe...both in terms of use and in terms of its extraction(no pollution risks to the water table)?
I haven't voted because I want much more information. Information that can be corroborated by an un-biased source.
A short term gain with a long term liability/consequences needs to be avoided.

Gordon....I suppose I could have voted Maybe, after more research.
That is the closest option.......but of course it would depend on a few things.......who did the research(I am cynical if the research is commissioned and paid for by the company who wants to make a commercial venture out of this) and of course what the research showed. I would have to look into it far more before I committed myself.

I still do not know why we cannot use tidal power to light and heat our homes. The tides are constant....the sea is rarely still, even on calm days....we are an island with a good sized coastline.....this kind of power would be green and safer than many other options.

At least it's gas produced here in Britain.

Not piped/shipped in from the Middle East, or Russia.

Get in now, before the areas reclaimed by the sea anyway.

Which will increase the price.

nowt wrong wi being cynical Margaret, meself i want cheaper gas,n certainly not nuclear, i think we concern ourselves a bit much wi this green crap,bottom line is to me, us minnions can do very little about it, twill always be controlled to a great extent by the money people.

You know when someone tries to sell you something that sounds too good to be true........you run like hell in the opposite direction(or, at least you should do)?
Well this plan for fuel sounds a bit like that to me. Yes of course I would like cheaper fuel........I'm not an idiot(though there are some who have alluded to the fact that they don't think I'm the brightest bulb in the box....and you know who you are), but I would like to think that we would not be doing untold damage before I sign up to this.......and Cashy it isn't all about being 'green'....I am one of those who think that climate change has been hyped up to scare us and take money out of our pockets.
