Do you use Butter

On BBC Breakfast this morning a leading Heart surgeon said that Butter should be banned because it contain about 60% saturated fats. Is he right to ask for the ban and do you use it. Myself I cant remember the last time I had butter, it must be 20 years so it wouldn't bother me if it was banned or not

Re: Do you use Butter

better to use a smattering of butter than some man made artificial tasteless crap IMHO.

humans have been digesting natural fats for thousands of years, trans fats etc were designed and heart disiese goes up, so much so that most manufacturers now are trying to remove them from their products.

I'll stick to good old cow juice fat thanks!

I use Anchor spreadable, so I presume that it's a slightly better option - could be crap for all I care, I just use it because I like the taste.

Re: Do you use Butter

Those nasty trans fats are the ones described as 'hydrogenated' or 'partly hydrogenated' on the label.
Doing that increases their shelf life (and manufacturers profits), but they are harder to digest.
I agree entirely with Entwisi - natural fats are best.
I only use butter and olive oil in preparing food.

"Trans fats are much less well-known than saturated fats but are much more damaging. They are very bad for the heart, play a key role in the UK's very high levels of heart disease and contribute to a large number of the excess coronary deaths we have in this country,"

I keep some buter, for glazing vegetables etc.

Cabbage with margarine is disgusting, with a little butter and black pepper, divine.

Like most things, in moderation, if you enjoy them, they are good for you.

Also, it's not all bad.

'It is worth knowing also that while it is a saturated fat, not everything about it is bad. Butter contains natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, important for fighting those autumn colds and coughs.'

Re: Do you use Butter

I still use butter but not as often as i used to. I never found the taste of any of the other spreads or margarines to be very good, however ive now started using the "I cant believe its not butter Light version" which actually does have a buttery taste, so mainly that now, but not all supermarkets stock it, and i have butter for a treat now and then!

Re: Do you use Butter

If I could afford it I would use butter all the time, after all it has it's advantages when used in the correct proportions of a healthy diet.

Unfortunately most of my diet isn't healthy because bulk buying cheap sausages, mince and micro-wave meals stave off the hunger a lot better than buying little of the more expensive cut's that are claimed to be better for us.
