Re: English Language Lessons??

One thing that's always baffled me is the American term 'jaywalking'. What is it

Re: English Language Lessons??

Maybe you should ask Prof. Felipe Fernández-Armesto! I think he'll have a good idea by now.

Re: English Language Lessons??

The prof who got on the wrong side of the cops in Atlanta and ended up being thrown to the ground, handcuffed and jailed.

I think it means crossing the street at the wrong place. They prefer people to cross at 'intersections' - road junctions to you and me.

Re: English Language Lessons??

Ahh right, I've not heard of him.

Right, I would have guessed that 'jaywalking' was the equivalent of walking around on our motorways

Re: English Language Lessons??

I wouldn't have expected it to cover things like crossing a road in the wrong place either but maybe it's more dangerous over there. Perhaps wandering about on motorways is "aggravated jaywalking" or something.

Gosh Ian, don't be saying that. The powers that be will start demanding helmets for all sledgers!

That's what makes it a thrill ride down our back hill. You've got to avoid a stump then through the gate, hopefull avoiding the barbwire! That's when the rocks come into play.

That's what I like about the control our sled has. The boards the kids go on are totally unsteerable for anyone over 40!

Re: English Language Lessons??

Like it's been said, just crossing a busy raod away from the established crosswalks. It's a fine art when getting around a city. It's done all the time and rarely enforced. I guess you could get a ~$25 ticket for it.

It's mostly enforced, I presume, where there have been many pedestrians hit. Or maybe where on coming traffic is coming from a blind spot. No idea why it's called jaywalking though!
