Well I've lived in the area all my life , Fern Gore for eighteen years and the rest further down in Spring Hill . Like most places there have been changes , and some parts round here are pretty grotty .

The changes definitely for the worse are the decrease in neighbourliness and the lack of community spirit , but I guess that's the case everywhere .

We were latchkey kids , but we were cared for by the folks around .

I think I remember using that ginnel as a shortcut from the Village Blacksmith to the chippy down on Lower Barnes St.

That's the one - the chippy was directly across the road from my house

Location, location, location ... next door to one pub, a short stagger from another, across the street from a chippy, 30 seconds from the bus stop. And right in the heart of the bottom end of Clayton.

Re: Fern Gore cottages??

Hi Suedarbo
I had a word with my sister and she also suggested that those cottages near the narrow bridge could be the ones you are looking for. As for the names of your Grandfather I`m sorry but I cant add anything to what you already knew.

Re: Fern Gore cottages??

Hi Suedarbo
Are'nt you glad you put your Grandfathers name up on Accyweb? Here's another reason to make you a little happier. Whilst on holiday in sunny Accy for the last 2 weeks (not long enough) I went , as I usually do, into Mrs Parkins shop in Burnley Rd. to buy some nostalgia, books etc., amongst these was " An Accrington Miscellany" compiled by Ronald Y. Digby and Alice Miller (ISBN 0 9022287 3 0) On page 27 an article headed 'Nicknames', by Jack Wells quote 'At Town Bent pit sixty years ago nearly everybody was better known by nickname. Here are some that come to mind'. Amongst these is one 'Limping Riley' correct name 'Oldham'. Could this be your Granddad?

I think that was my great grandfather. Thank you so much for letting me know. I will confirm this with my brother but I'm almost sure it's my great granddad
