Fire in accrington area?
There's a heck of a lot of smoke in the atmosphere around where I live. There must be a huge fire somewhere!

Re: Fire in accrington area?
They're still there now, double checking the roof spaces and damping down, was four engines when I went past to take Em to nursery a couple were leaving as I came back. Fortunately this particular block of houses appears to be empty as they were part of the renovation project in woodnook (probably now defunct!) and due for demolision. Hopefully no-one was inside.
The main house involved in the fire has no roof anymore!

You are right that area is a disgrace but who do you think caused the area to become a mess and now whose money is going to have to sort it out?

Re: Fire in accrington area?
This area woodnook was due to be involved in the 'Renovate' regeneration project, a 3 stage, £3 million project that would be knocking down houses on Booth Street, Royds Street, August Street and Wilfred Street and replacing them with an open green space. The rest of the area was due to get new 'faces' to every house with sandblasting and the like and all the roofs on the remaining houses repaired to encourage people to come back to the area. Also it included the old Woodnook dying company land where there was supposed to be a nature reserve and a new housing estate.
All info on this project has gone quiet since the General Election, leaving most of the residents to presume that this has been canned. Leaving four streets of houses clad in metal door and window protectors and open to squatters and other misuses.
I've lived in the area for 16 years and it used to be a reasonable area, now its awful.

Re: Fire in accrington area?
It started going downhill at least 10 years ago.
I dont often agree with using public money to repair private homes especially when a lot are buissness properties for private landlords but this area was started so it needs to be finished.

Re: Fire in accrington area?
In my opinion its the private landlords in this area who have had the most to contribute to its downfall, there is at least one who will rent to anyone (and I mean Anyone!) as long as he gets his money from the social at the end of every month.

Re: Fire in accrington area?
I agree with you totally and I am hoping the new council will sort out private landlords, I know it has been mentioned by them before.

Re: Fire in accrington area?
The thing is that one of the biggest private landlords in the area has run for local council previously and to my mind he is one of the worst offenders as a landlord!!

wasnt there plans put forward to bring private landlords under control but they were thrown out.Im sure iv read here that there was.
mind you if the majority of council houses wernt sold off there wouldnt be such a need for private landlords
i used to live in that area and a lot of properties were bought by the likes of sterling homes.Speaking of which are sterling homes still going they were the proper cowboys of the private housing trade infact i viewed 4 or 5 of their properties a few years back and each one of them was a disgrace infact i felt sory for any rat that found its self with no other option but to stay in one of their properties never mind a human
