Re: Great harwood show???

Found this Bernie ... have seen another report somewhere, but can't find it now ... they are bringing the show jumping back this year.

Someone was saying that the new venue field is not very well drained, so put on some good shoes, however, just passing on someone else's remarks.

MONDAY
9am onwards – Great Harwood agricultural show at the new showground, Harwood Lane/Whalley Road, Great Harwood. Admission £5, children/pensioners £3.
1pm – Trail Race run at Great Harwood show. Entries will be taken on the day.

Re: Great harwood show???

Just remembered was in The Herald ... good write up ..nowt much in Observer though ... 'cept What's On section ....

Lots of things for children Bernie .. mini-farm with lambs, piglets, goats, rabbits, chicks and llamas and have photographs taken with them; bouncy castles, climbing walls, hog roast and Ostrich burgers. Dog owners can get their pets microchipped on site. Lots more .. sounds really good, so off you trot.

That's a shame, expensive 2 hours eh ? That cover charge is a killer with a family.

I am not a green welly type, but did go once many years ago, because a 'friend' was one of the shire horse judges.
When that friendship faded I had no inclination to don wellies again.
(and the smell of horses isn't romantic)

maybe you should have thought about your choice of venue for you and you kids before you set off..if you went there solely to get ice cream and a bouncy castle and a look round and not have a particular interest in agriculture or farm animals or horses of different breeds or show rabbits or chickens or hens then that was a total waste of money..

we went as we knew what it was about and have an interest in this kind of thing and thought it was great and at a £5 to get in..well that was worth it., lots of different class of farm birds as well as sheep, and the shires were well presented..and the pimms was only a £1! although I didnt divulge in that - left that to the other half..and the hogg roast was the business..
all in all a great day and a much better venue that when at the showground..

Re: Great harwood show???

I used to go to Gt Harwood show in the 50s and early 60s. My friend had horses and used to compete in the show jumping. It was a real agricultural show then, there wasn't much there that wasn't connected with farming and livestock, and it was great. There aren't so many of those shows around now, we have the Cheshire Show here, at Tatton Park, but the smaller shows seem to have gone though this is a "horsey" and farming area.

Thank you for your input, we did look in the tents but got squashed looking at the rabbits because there was no full path.Parents with prams couldnt even get round!
We looked at the miniature gardens, the painted eggs. And then there was the so called petting corner, which has 2 sheep,1 cow that looked quite ill,a chicken that had turned itself into a coke bottle,1 goat and a spitting lama!
We did watch the horses and the birds and went at looked at the dogs.
Please do not assume that i went not knowing what it was about but my opinion still stands it was a complete and total rip off !
£5 for each adult and £3 for each child, really wish i had gone to Darwen there there was a real show and no charge !

Suppose it is because the promoters of the show do not support our newspaper by advertising Jaysay, and the paper will not be particularly keen on free advertising ?

Thumbs up Re: Great harwood show???

Just joined and thought would add a reply that Great Harwood Show now - at last - has a web site. Great Harwood Show only just gone live and needs amending yet.
