Has anyone heard of toggles?
I think thats the term. I heard about it a few years ago, dont know if it is still running. Basically, there was a booklet (pre www) filled with peoples names who were part of the scheme. You had to offer a service for free in exchange for something you wanted doing ie, a haircut for some joinery etc im not explaining this very well, sorry.
For example, if i wanted a gate built in the garden, i would ring someone on the list who could do it and then i would owe them a service.
Sounds xrated doesnt it?

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
I take it you have to be able to do something that others will find usefull. What service are you offering?

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
Well, if its not up and running i think we should set it up. Freecycle all ready recycle goods why not exchange services.

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
There was a scheme in Hyndburn a few years ago, don't know what happened or if it's still running and I can't for the life of me remember what it was called but I do remember somebody saying that you should declare any acts done for you on your income tax return which seemed a bit barmy. The government was having a huffy that it wasn't getting enough tax because people were doing things for acts or goods in return rather than for wages.
The scheme had a sort of pseudo currency and an accounts system so that if you "earned" thingies by doing something for someone then they didn't necessarily have to be the ones who repaid you, you could use your tokens to "pay" someone else within the scheme for something that they had which you needed.
Somewhere along the way I loaned out a sewing machine and lost track of it. I opted out when there was all this talk of it being defrauding the Inland Revenue.

I want a massage, in exchange I'll give witty insults or lessons in perspective in drawing.

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
Actually these schemes were goverment encouraged. The idea was to help low income families as they would get 'full value' for their work. At no point was the IR upset about them.
I've done similar things in the past. e.g. I used to teach Julies hairdresser how to use her computer. in exchange she cut julies hair for nowt. Likewise I run a few websites and get stuff done for me in exchange.

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
i think its a brilliant idea as i am completely useless at diy, washing up, hoovering, mowing the grass, the list goes on. I am forced to build everything myself and as a result, everythings lopsided. (note to self- must invest in a straight thingy with the bubble inside, level thing!)

Re: Has anyone heard of toggles?
I always tell my wife that I do work around the house for sexual favours. As it is I don't do much DIY and no it's not because she is too busy repaying me
