Well I had 4 in the 70s, didn't even know what a disposable looked like.

Had 2 in 89 and had the terries, but did invest in a few packs of disposables occasionally, lot of flippin nappies with 2 especially with 4 teenagers to sort as well.

Didn't have my first washer till after my second cashy, and that was an old servis with the mangle on.

Got my first fridge after the fourth one came along.

Remember getting my first automatic washer, can't remember when, but I sat in front of it watching the first time I used it coz it was so brilliant.

It is time to let people know that it is very possible to enjoy life without-
a fridge, a washing machine, a mobile phone, an Ipod., a Weeeee and all that
I was gonna say 'we oldies have been there done that and got the Tshirt'
but that Tshirt was homemade

for those that dont know what bedticking was - it was stiff fabric made into bags which housed the cotton flocks which you slept on

I know someone who was so poor in the Fifties they had to wear sixty year Victorian knee high boots, which had to be fastened with a boot hook...luckily it wasn't a boy that was forced to wear them.

I have to disagree with Mancie.

All the gathered evidence supports the claim that the poorest sections of society spend by far the greatest pecentage of their income on food, but it is food with the least nutritional value.

Not passing judgement, just making an observation, and it is a generalisation.

Might be because children are being taught the wrong subjects in Food Technology lessons, when really the best lesson they could be taught would be to shown how to cook cheaply and nutritionally, starting from scratch with fresh ingredients.

All my kids can cook bar from my 18 yr old and thats due to lazyness. But on the other hand he wouldnt go hungry either. (prob get his sis to cook something)
Seriously though I have taught all mine to cook , My daughter (17) can cook a full sunday lunch, Yes she still needs to be guided with the odd cooking time but if I or hubby wasnt here she would do it without doubt.
My eldest lad loves cooking and is always doing so for him and his wife. My other lad can cook and can cook properly but chooses not to which makes me angry because it would save him a fortune.
Kids dont have cooking lessons at school now like we did,
We had cookery evey tues afternoon and we were taught everything from the basics upwards but most teachers cant cook these days so what chance do the kids have.

Lindsey Im so sorry to hear abut your nephew too , I understand how you feel because a similar thing happend to my cousin a few years back .
It is such a shock when something like this happens.

You can cook things from fresh just as cheaply as buying convienience food, it's been proved many times, but a lot of people don't know how to, or say they haven't the time, which is a bit laughable, especially if you're not working.

I was always dahn the market when I lived in London, and used to feed myself for next to nowt, especially if like me you go when they are packing up.

When Mancie paid 13p for battermix I doubt whether he got more than 2 or 3 pancakes out of it.
For the same price spent on egg milk and flour he could have doubled the number he made and it wouldn't have been 'bulked up' with preservatives
