Re: Ice-cream...whats Your Favourite?

what about Birtwells? They used to come round every Sunday afternoon with the horse and cart...and the ice cream came in one flavour - vanilla...but you could have a shake of raspberry vinegar on it. I was just a child and liked ice cream way back then.

Re: Ice-cream...whats Your Favourite?

If it has to be supermarket stuff, then choc chip, smarties, rum and raisin, most of the carte dor stuff, trouble is, when I start, I can easily finish the whole tub.

Re: Ice-cream...whats Your Favourite?

They may have called it 'blood' but I knew it as raspberry vinegar......maybe they thought if they asked a sweet little girl(which is what I was then.....50 thump years ago)
I would take fright and run......maybe only the boys got 'blood'

Re: Ice-cream...whats Your Favourite?

I think that is possible......it was definitely vinegar(raspberry) it was thin and it was in a vinegar shaker...it wasn't the thick gloopy stuff like they put on today....and it wasn't the livid red colour either.

Since you are age 46, it isn't the lady you remember.

She made icecream in the late 40's and early 50's. Her house was opposite St Pauls Church on Catlow Hall St.

Such practices wouldn't be allowed nowadays for public health reasons because all places where food is prepared for sale have to be inspected and approved.

Robinsons Dairy Ice, Leyland. They used to have Ice Cream vans and I remember as a child waithing for them to come down our street, we used to get my mums mixing bowl filled with it. Still call in now and then for one. Other than that Hagen Das, Belgian Choc Chip. yum

Re: Ice-cream...whats Your Favourite?

I've had Mackie's vanilla a few times from the supermarket (Asda and Tesco) and it's really nice, with an 'old fashioned' taste. Looking at their website it looks as though they're small-scale enough to still be legitimate
