Lost Pub

There was/is a small pub on Whalley Road Clayton.
Situated near Sparth Road.
I spent many an hour in there, dominoes, darts, spud pie, with John Laing.
Could someone give me any information of one or better still both.

Re: Lost Pub

Dunno how long you've been south of the equator, Lance...but Accy/Hyndburn now has lots of lost pubs. At a rough guess, we've lost at least 50% in the last 30 years. It may even be nearer to 75%. I can't remember the one up by Sparth Road, though.

Re: Lost Pub

If you mean The Lamb Inn, it's now been converted into flats - think that The Oddfellows a couple of doors up is still open though.
Only other one I know is The Royal Oak on Sparth Road itself - not sure but I think that's also closed & up for sale

Re: Lost Pub

I'm just thinking of the pubs there are/used to be roughly from Church to Accy, along the line of Blackburn/Hyndburn Road. The ones marked with an * are now closed:

Commercial*
Thorn
X Guns
Queens*
Stag
Wellington*
Bridge
Tanpits*
Tanpits club*
Oak Tree*
Antley*
Hyndburn*
Miners*
Palatine*
Union*
Last Orders (can't remember original name)
One next door* (Globe?)
Black Bull*
Blockade*
AEU club*
Imperial
't'other one before it.
Apollo.*

Thats 16 closed/demolished out of 23, which I make 70%. It's a poor do for us drinkers.

Last Orders was the Royal and the one next door was definitely the Globe. The one before the Imperial is the Spread Eagle, which was still open last time I walked past it a few months ago. Grim reading indeed, Tealeaf!

Re: Lost Pub

Aye, it's even grimmer - I forgot about the Crown. 17 out of 24 = 71%.

Now corrected. I'm a bit vague on Accy town centre - I'm not sure where to cut off, so maybe the Apollo should'nt be on the list. But even with Accy town centre, there's enough closed there.

I guess the Ossy list from the Black Dog to Church Commercial would be even worse.

Ooops...I missed King St Club...so including that/excluding Apollo gives the same %.

Re: Lost Pub

I think we all know the reasons...cheap supermarket booze..corner shop sales...all those inhabitants along Blackburn Road who have taken the pledge. Its such a dam shame...some fantastic Victorian and earlier architecture, now gone for good.

Can't remember the last time I had a drink on Union Road, was probably in the Cross 20 years ago, so ain't a clue which are still open, I know the Black Dog and Rose and Crown are still open, Oak Tree? New Inn? Cross? Bay Horse is open I think, Tinker? Foxhills gone, Printers? the Royal ? You wouldn't get gatted starting with a thimble full and doubling up on a Pub Crawl from the Dog to the Commercial, sad very sad
