Map type info

Does anyone have a map which has the local rivers/streams/brooks marked on and named?

I met someone last night who referred to something as the River Hyndburn and yet later the same evening someone else called that particular stretch of water Woodnook Water. Considering a lot of the Hyndburn is built over I find it confusing knowing which bit is which and where it goes to and comes from. It would be useful to see it all named properly on a map.

If you come up with anything WTW, perhaps you could scan it in and let us all have a look at that. I would be very interested also.

The larger scale Ordnance Survey maps are usually very detailed, though I wouldn't scan a copy in as JohnW suggests, or you may fall foul of copyright law. Here's a link to the OS website: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/

On the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger series of maps (pink cover), what we refer to as the River Stink is called Hyndburn Brook. It is only called this after it has passed under the A678, Rishton to Clayton road by Rishton Paper Mill.

I have a ordanance survey Explorer 287 1:25,000 covering accy and beyond I will have a study and see if I can get my bearings???

Woodnook water is labeled as such on the other side of dual carriageway on the right as you go uphill from rising bridge. Area called Stone fold, it from there run's downhill past rising bridge pub to small body of water, small gap to 2 small res's then stream run's down old railway line until it goes underground at woodnook, There are several area's where a river is shown in the town but to trace it path would need a lot of people and little floating clues

There is another stream(Wham's brook) running from oswaldtwistle to foxhill bank/ alleytroyds and then disapear's again presumably to join "woodnook water" and emerge as Sparky said near Rishton as Hyndbrook brook?

The real interesting bit is where the water goes underground

At springhill where we used to live the manhole cover near our house had a "stream" going under it all the time...One day after heavy rain the pipe carrying the stream got more than it could cope and popped a few of the manhole covers out and lifted the pavement 6inch's outside our house.

This makes good reading I am going back to the map

That reminds me many years ago when I lived with my parents in Sultan Street. One summer we'd been away visiting my Aunt & Uncle and the day we left there was torrential rain. As we came back up from town coming home we came up Water Street and turned the corner where the Co-op used to be and got a shock! The cobbled street looked like there'd been a volcanic eruption under it! There was a huge mound with cobble stones all over the place.

The neighbours told us that water had come down with such force under the ground and hit the foundations of the building at the bottom, couldn't go any further and had burst up through the road flinging cobblestones left right and centre.

Our house was amazingly quite dry inside as we were the only ones to have two steps up to the front door. The water had only just reached that level and seeped in a little under the door and settled in the doormat well.

I wish I could have seen the volcano.

Going back to those manhole covers - was it one with holes in? I remember steam and strange smells coming up out of those.
