Re: Modern art, art or just a big con ?
What art is, is open to interpretation.
To some opera is high art, to others it's just a big woman warbling.

Re: Modern art, art or just a big con ?
I remember a sketch (I think it was The Two Ronnies) set in a modern gallery where they were admiring the works of art. They stood there commenting on one arrangement about how the layout was so imaginative and how it evoked this that and the other - until the cleaner came along and gathered up her mop and bucket to go and clean another room!

Re: Modern art, art or just a big con ?
'An American lady travelling to Paris in 1913 - the kind of American lady who will still be travelling to Paris in 2013 - asked Ezra Pound what he thought art was for. Pound replied, 'Ask me what a rose bush is for.'
'I know of a man, a Quaker, who volunteered as an ambulance driver in World War Two. While other men had pictures of their sweethearts in their breast pockets, he carried a photo of a Queen Anne chair.'
Jeanette Winterson - Journalism - The Guardian - 2002 - What is art for?

Very interesting read there Garinda. Thanks for posting it.
Perhaps this thread should be retitled, art to choke hearts?

Re: Modern art, art or just a big con ?
The play Art is all about three friends - one of them is a minimalist who lives in a white apartment, he buys a white painting and hangs it on the wall. His friends can't see the point. Doesn't seem much of a plot for a play but apparently the whole thing is really funny.

Now you see I could find that a very interesting subject for a play and can see how it could be funny.

Art the play, is very funny, and worth catching if you get the chance. I saw it in London in the mid nineties, with Tom Courtenay, Ken Stott, and Albert Finney, they were wonderful.
