I would still err on the cautious Shaz, a friend of mine was killed using a grinder to cut the top off an oil drum, I dont know what kind of oil was in the drum, but it set him on fire and he died from the injuries, his name was Steve Walsh and he owned Auto rescue in Bury, Im not trying to be morbid, just asking you be careful!

I totally agree Derek,
I spent thirty years in the chemical and hazardous liquid business driving tankers.
We had to attend many courses on safety and pass C&G exams.
It was stressed most strongly that you never allowed a naked flame,heat or spark to any enclosed vessel which had contained a flammable liquid. Even the most friendly liquids such as heavy oil can give off flammable gases when heated. Practical demonstrations were done using small models in laboratory setting with the utmost of safety.

Strongly agree with derekgas and Gremlin. Don't use a grinder on a drum that has had oil in it, Shaz! Even motor oil gives off volatile fumes which will ignite when mixed with air and exposed to a spark. The amount of gas in an oil drum would give one hell of a bang and you'd be right on top of a steel drum exploding! Think what happened to the Japanese nuclear power station buildings-same problem.
Don't know what the others think but if you filled it full of water (to get rid of the gas and oil first) I think it would then be safe to cut.Just don't let the water get on the grinder or you have another dangerous problem.

Personally , I would have used a drill to make a hole , then a jigsaw with a metal cutter in it . Shaz got it at 10.44 so it must have a very large hole in it by now !

use a cold chisel and a lump hammer , ideal project for a young lad and his mates, fill it with water first to stableize it and cut down on the noise

lol David, we got it home, i put it in the garden, hid it from 'scrappers' and just left it, going to have a go at it tomorrow at some point if the weather is ok

SJ, Reece's mates would end up rolling it down the street whilst one of them was in it, i daren't let them loose on it, reckon i'd better do it myself

sorry , missed your post .... anyway its good training for a sprog , good for teaching hand/eye co-ordination, the fun part is using a 1/16" drill to open up your first blackened finger nail, though these days it would probably be classed as child cruelty and require a hard hat, ear muffs, steel toe cap boots and a respirator .

Shaz I burnt some of my brambles and over growth from the garden the other day but was told by my Dad to ring the Fire Stn first to let them know I was having a "controlled" fire.

They appreciated my call and told me in future to call if I was having any more just incase a neighbour in the surrounding area called them out.

Thanx Heth, it will be controlled, when i attempt to get the top off this bin, i only have one neighbour, i doubt he will ring the fire brigade, he's the old chap in the photo's, mi dad
