Old Court House, Accrington

Does anyone have any details of where the Old Court House was located in Accrington in the late19th and early 20th centuries?

There is a photo of it in the Accrington Jubilee Souvenir book .. doesn't appear to say where though ? Don't recognise anything around it either. Not much help I know.

not the same i know, but was once told that the old "Grain Court" was in the Old Black Bull on "Bull Bridge" which was my local at that time, would appreciate any info about this.

The Old Court House was in Manchester Rd, approximately where the last bay of the Fire Station and the first of the fire station houses are.

There was a picture on here some while back, looking down towards the Wesley Church, the building on the left was the Court House

Was the courthouse there as early as late 19th century though? I seem to remember something about a tunnel under the Blackburn Rd end of Broadway to take prisoners too and from the court.

I think it could also be on one of the old postcards of Accrington

I think Baron Munchausen also mentions it in his old homesteads

Have just read something Cashy that suggests that the Black Bull has been an ale house since the middle of the seventeenth century or even earlier, whether it changed to a grain court then back again is anybody's guess.

The Black Bull Inn dates from the early 1600, it was the first coaching inn at the north end of Old Accrington, on the old road from Whalley, it was rebuilt in the mid 1700's, and was razed in the late 1980's, to make way for an extension to Nori Brick Works tip. Some joker then called it a multi storey car park.

i wish i knew proper kate, i think it was were the grain prices etc were decided? perhaps Wretlaw could answer if such a thing existed? i would love to know.

Sorry Cashman but I've never heard of a grain court.
Years ago I started a dictionary of all the old words and places in Accrington, that I came across whilst searching thro the Halmote Court Rolls, the Coucher Book of Kirkstall and the Chetham Society Records. Never came across any thing relating to Grain Court. The dictionary runs to about 70 A4 pages in alphabetical order A to Z.

I'l ask you one whats a Zitherator, came across an entry "William the Zitherator", a signature on an old document, and don't cheat by googling it.
