Re: Paper rounds...

I've been a complete doughnut. I selected 'no' instead of 'yes - free paper/weekly'.
Sorry!

Re: Paper rounds...

I did mornings & Evenings alright in Summer, rubbish in Winter

I also did Sundays which were the more lucrative rounds, but bag used to weigh a ton with all the supplements that were in them!

But best of the lot was a collection round on Friday Evenings collecting from the Large Houses in Reedley who did not go into the paper shop to pay their bills I went to them, used to get £3 plus 10% of what I collected which was usually another £3 apart from once a month when the monthly bill payers paid and it could be up to a tenner extra

But Christmas was the best, Tips galore

Happy Days

Re: Paper rounds...

I was a paper girl.

I delivered morning papers, Sunday papers and the free Citizen paper.

Delivering the Citizen was the worst. People used to say 'Do you want to hang it up in my bathroom? That's all it's good for.'

I quite enjoyed delivering the morning and Sunday ones though.

I didn't enjoy it quite so much when it was pelting with rain/hailstone/snow but, looking at it from an adult's perspective, paper rounds sure do teach kids the importance of getting up on time in a morning, punctuality, being reliable and turning up even when you might not feel like it.

It's such a shame that parents are now fearful of letting their kids do paper rounds. My two are only young at the moment but when they get to 13/14 I will consider it. I suppose you have to weigh it up....how many kids do paper rounds every day for years without anything bad happening to them versus how many kids come to harm as a result of doing their paper rounds.

As was mentioned in the thread about Bernadette's grandson, we cannot be afraid to let kids have a bit of independence.

Re: Paper rounds...

the only thing i enjoyed about delivering the free newspapers (the Herald and Post as it was then) was the christmas tips you got, i remember me and our Kelly going around Cranbourne Drive and getting £13 in tips from that one street, back in 1989 that was quite a lot of money for a kid, i think we ended up with 50 ish quid that year, mind you we had to deliver a hell of a lot of papers all year round to earn those tips

In many ways I am a Brierfielder. To keep this on thread sort of , in the days of proper wakes weeks my Grandad used to sell papers from a doorway in Brierfield centre cos all the shops were shut. I used to help him, so apart from having a paper round I was also a paper seller

No Brierfield!

Born on Castle Street

Attended Walter Street & Edge End

But grew up on Halifax Road just below the Snowball and spent my formative Years on Heyhead Park, The Snowball, The Stump, Junc & The Railway

Still go back for the odd night out but it's not the same anymore!
