Paper rounds...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7431224.stm
Ok im being nosy... but just read this on the bbc website about paper rounds - that newsagents are stopping home deliveries because they cant get the kids to do the paper rounds and they are also losing out to supermarkets etc. So did you do a paper round? How much did you get paid? I used to do one round mon - sat up over sherfin and down to lower stonefold on the other side and back down to rising bridge 6 nights a week for which i got the princely sum of £2. Then i'd do the same round on Sunday but i was my own employer - and get roundabout another £2.50. Some of the wages that they say they get now £20 a week i would have been oh so happy with that. When i started the paper round my dad stopped my spending money - he said i was earning now and that was that. Wasnt fair....

Re: Paper rounds...
My paper's delivered by the newsagent himself, probably because no one wants the job.

Re: Paper rounds...
1961/62, the going rate in Gt.Harwood was 1/- per round , same for mornings and evenings , ...total 12/- (12 shillings per week) think the Saturday pink was 1/6d not sure about the Sundays didn't do them
Either Wednesday or Thursday mornings were the worst, all the womens mags came out that day, similar with Fridays , the TV and Radio Times .

Re: Paper rounds...
to be honest, i think a lot of parents have concerns about the childs safety. At the end of the day, especially in the winter, you have children out in the dark, at regular times each day delivering papers. I wouldnt be happy with my son doing this, (when he's older obviously)

Re: Paper rounds...
i know what you mean Nicky, today isnt like when we where kids is it, more stabbings and shootings going on, i wont be letting Reece do a paper round for the simple reason that its too tying, i tend to get up some mornings and just decide to go somewhere there and then, if he had a paper round we wouldnt be able to do that, i will encourage him to get a saturday job when he's old enough though

Re: Paper rounds...
seem to remember it was mentioned in another thread a few months ago about kids from the local area having to have a medical exam somewhere up near the old Accy baths if they wanted to have a paper route , if memory serves, the minimum age was 13 .

Re: Paper rounds...
I never had a paper round, the local papershop already had a paperboy and that was my brother!
But to be honest, I dont think that I would be too happy at my neice or nephew doing a paper round, just dont think its safe for them to be wandering the streets alone during the winter mornings and evenings

Re: Paper rounds...
Our newsagent is having a problem on Sundays as his Sunday paper deliverer gave up. He often delivers them himself, by car, but has to wait until he has help in the shop (grocers/off licence) before he can get out. Instead of reading the paper after breakfast it's more often after lunch.
This is a semi-rural area and not really frequented by knife-wielding or gun-toting nomarks. The daily (Monday to Saturday) paper boy delivers on his bike before going to the High School at 8 a.m. and the weekly free paper is delivered by a lad who runs the whole round, after school, in his shorts and singlet. Sunday mornings, though, they obviously all want a lie-in. I suppose I can't blame them.

Re: Paper rounds...
Phil and I have two sons who both have paper rounds, they work 7-8am, Mon-Sat and get £15 a week each.
