Re: Plinths on accy market hall
Here's Burnley, Bob - similar chimneys and arched windows but not nearly as pretty as Accy at the front.
Burnley Market Hall
I think Gary is right - Accy is the most beautiful market hall in the country.

There is only one thing wrong with that WM....gargoyles are nicer looking than PB!

My daughter, who lives up this way, mentioned Piece Hall a few months ago. I had never heard of it ... googled, of course, and sounds absolutely amazing.
Been to Halifax many times, but this place evaded me.
Have put in diary to visit soon.

Get there before they ruin it, restoration planned by 2015:
The Piece Hall – The Piece Hall 2015
I haven't been yet but it's somewhere I've always meant to go... same as Bury Market.

Margaret that's soooo like me - I love doing things like that, sadly at the moment it's not so easy but looking forward...
My best bus ride was Lancaster to Keswick and back, 3 hrs each way through the Lakes, all for 50p each way - that was before the bus pass was totally free.

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
My best bus ride was when I was eighteen, half-way back from Malham Tarn to Skipton.
Was helping my friend Jacqui prepare for her Dof E Gold Award and we'd been walking with massive backpacks and camping all weekend. That bus was like an Oasis in the desert when it appeared!
Was a great weekend though -mid-august and we lay with our heads outside the tent watching shooting stars at two in the morning!

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I go off on the bus to Manchester sometimes with my camera and just enough money to buy lunch and a drink...that is so that I cannot be seduced by the shops.
I love the architecture of the old buildings in the city.

There are so many wonderful places to visit. Often people who live there don't see the beauty of the place, they don't lift their eyes from the pavement or the level of the modern shop fronts which usually have little of interest to offer.
A place I love is Santa Cruz in Tenerife, amazing mix of modern and colonial -if I lived on Tenerife I'd be there every week -my mum, who lives on the Island just doesn't get my enthusiasm, only ever goes if I insist -you and your camera would have a field day Margaret!
In the UK and not to far from you is Liverpool -am revisiting it virtually at the moment, after being student there in the 80's -fantastic place -think you'd like it if you've never been...

Re: Plinths on accy market hall
I have never been to Liverpool, but I am sure it has similar architecture to Manchester...after all they are both towns that were forged by industry and commerce.
(I lied - I have been to Liverpool, but only once to a study day at one of the hospitals there....it was November ...dark when we landed, and dark and foggy when we were driving home).
I think there are many places in the Uk that are under-rated for their character and their beauty. I like Leeds.....not what some would consider beautiful, but full of character.

Never really taken to Liverpool - visited it a lot when I was a student in Preston and had a holiday in Southport a few years ago and visited Liverpool on several days for the Tall Ships Race. Still didn't do it for me - sounds patronising but I do think it's partly the accent!
Manchester was always my stamping ground and when we lived in the midlands I got very fond of Birmingham.
