Power of Attorney

I have been mum's full-time carer since her stroke in 2009. A few people from various agencies have suggested that I get Power of Attorney in case her condition worsens in the future. We have seen a solicitor about it and been told it would cost over £600. Because of the expense we have decided to ask at her various banks to see if they would allow mum to authorise me to operate her accounts. Has any Accy Webber arranged anything similar or set up a Power of Attorney?

Yes My missus and me set up power of attorney when her mother was in a nursing home for her final days. It allowed us to draw money from her bank to pay for her care and anything else she needed.

Did it cost a similar amount to the figure I was quoted?

To be honest I can't remember . It was in 2001 but I know it seemed very expensive at the time. We got it through the mother-in-law's solicitor . He fees wer included in the final settlement after her will.

I have recently got myself authorised as the agent on my mums bank account.
I can do for her everything she could once do for herself.......Ma's problem is one of mobility....and everything to do with her finances I can now manage without any problems(though I have never drawn money from her account - just presented bills to be paid from it).

Doing this didn't cost me anything(apart from time).

Yes my Mum is the Power of Attorney for my Grandma, I dont know the in's and out's of how she went about it (I can ask if you like) but she has looked after all my Grandma's accounts now for 10 years with no probs.

My Grandma had a stroke and more recently had brain surgery so cannot handle money or bills or anything so it were a good thing my Mum sorted it sooner rather than later.

I have read about it, and Power of Attorney has to be set up while mum is of sound mind and can make a reasoned decision to agree to it. It just seems very expensive to set one up when it might never be needed!

According to the govt website you do not need a solicitor but it "can be useful if you have complicated personal, property or financial affairs."

Although I have seen this before, thanks for that. It seems the £600+ I was quoted includes a sizeable solicitor's fee.

i was my mums poa and i think it only cost us £90 .. the solicitor came out to the house and the doc and the social worker and they signed some stuff and gave us letters that we could give to the bank, dwp etc ...though that was about 11 years ago ....
