Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Hi

I would appreciate any help from members in finding details of the Rishton & Antley Motor Co., before it was merged with Ribble back in the early 30's.

Particularly looking for photos and details of the livery colours the company used on its buses.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Thanks for the reply, Gremlin.

I have been to this link before and there's similar on the Rishton website which both help to build the picture.

Just the pics and colours seem to be the missing detail.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

I have a book about the history of Ribble buses upto 1966 and there is no mention of the Rishton and Antley buses.

I drove for Standerwick for a while in 1966, they were part of Ribble and ran the first double deck coaches on the motorways. The coaches were called Gay Hostess's and did the Blackpool or Burnley to London service with a lady hostess serving tea and butties.
a
I hope you find more information on the Rishton and Antley buses.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

In the book Accringtons Public Transport on page 37 there is a picture of a Leyland PLSC3 bus of the Rishton & Calder company outside Accrington Grammar School and also in Hyndburn & Rossendale 75 years of Municipal Operation there is a photograph of a Tilling Stevens bus owned by Rishton Motor Company.

Unfortunately both in Black & White.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Thanks for the leads there Anzac - I'll certainly fish around for those.

And as for the Ribble motorway coaches Gremlin, you're really driving home the age thing! I remember those rather well!

I'll keep looking for the R&A information - appreciate the input from you both.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Does the photo below jog your memory Paul.
It was one of the Gay Hostess's which I drove on the Colne Burnley London run.

Would you name a coach service "Gay Hostess" nowadays?

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Remember them only too well!!! As for using the name these days, it's a definite no-no; probably a prison sentence!!!!

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

An answer to my R&A question!

I was pointed in the direction of a gentleman at the Ribble Enthusiasts Club who not only provided a pic of one of the company's Maudsley buses, but confirmed the livery as dark red and cream.

Good to see there are folk out there willing to help with odd requests!!

Thanks again Gremlin & Anzac for your own input.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

It would be nice to see the photos posted on here Paul if you don't mind.

I meet up with a few of the old people from Ribble and Standerwick a few times a year at the Commercial vehicle Museum Leyland and was going to ask them about Rishton and Antley motor co next time I go over.

One of them is the keeper of the archives and I am sure he will know a bit about it.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Sorry, I did mean to post the picture - senior moment but here it is. I've been asked to credit the image to the Ribble Enthusiasts Club who have an extensive Ribble related archive.

Not sure how to embed the image from my drive to the message, so done it as an attachment! Hopefully!!

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Walter Barnes did a lot of excursions on contract to Ribblesdale Batty Holt with his old AEC coach when I worked there in the 60's.

Re: Rishton & Antley Motor Co

Now Walter Barnes is one that I do remember! Had a few works do's which used Walter and I recall they were 'eventful' and quite slow trips!

And thanks Alan for the snippets - I'm getting a good overall picture coming together for the company now.
