Question Ritalin

Has anyone got a child on ritalin? (pm me if you dont wanna post it?)
or have any experience of ritalin..

Whats your opinion on giving a child behaviour modifying drugs?

obviously this is not something done lightly, these drugs are only given when a child has some sort of special need ( adhd, aspergers, autism etc) and the behaviour modification strategies that professionals use havent worked...........

Re: Ritalin

I know someone who has and it has been a godsend because he was violent and aggressive before and she would end up black and blue.

Every situation is different though.

Re: Ritalin

I have worked with a number of children and adults on this medication.

for the majority it has been a life saver if not for them for their parents.

In some cases it is cases it can do its job to well. It is also easy for children to get dependent on the drug.

Hey Em, I'm truly glad that this is the case over there. While my children were in school, it seemed that any boy who was a bit overactive (merely boylike) would be put on Ritalin.

Hence, any boy who "couldn't sit still (THEY ARE BOYS)" in class were put on this medication. It all seemed to happen when schools cut back on recess time and the sedentary video games left these kids with too much pentup energy.

I do hope England continues to medicate with these types of drugs for those that truly need them. Over here kids need to relearn how to climp trees, ride bikes, kick-the-can, heck even play hide and seek!

Be Well!

Brian
