Question Should smoking scenes in films be banned?

SmokeFree Liverpool is calling for films with smoking scenes to be given an 18 certificate.
This follows research showing that young people pick up the habit from film-watching.
What do you think?
Is this a good idea or PC gone mad?

bloody crazy if ya ask meth_4_11_101.gif

Its pc gone mad, I think as long as the actors in the scene dont have a problem with it, why the 18 certificate thats just daft.

Re: Should smoking scenes in films be banned?

Have you all forgotten that we are passive recipients and all go out and act out whatever we see in the films?

Last weekend I went to see Vantage Point with my girlfriend. On leaving the cinema we broke in to Target Technics, built up our arsenal and committed terrorist attacks all across Europe. It was an average Friday night.

Must be fair though - I have a vice that finds scenes like this..

...nothing shot of iconic. This would sound absurd to a get-smoke-out-of-media freak, they would see me as a subject of the media I take in. However I have responsibility enough to know that these are fictional film characters. I am fine to find them insatiably cool because they have no link to reality, therefore no impact upon my life or my actions.

Dear God, when will the brainwashing end? I am a non-smoker (ex-smoker) but it doesn't give me the right to dictate to others what they should do, watch, partake in or otherwise enjoy. I am so sick of living in a country that becomes more morally controlling with every passing day.

Re: Should smoking scenes in films be banned?

Not sure anything but a ban would work, raising the age limit to 18 for smoking content won't work, because too many parents allow under 18's to watch them, I agree in principle that if it should be fact, that this encourages youngsters to smoke, then ban it, but it won't stop youngsters seeing people in everyday life smoking, I do though in general agree that smoking influences on minors should be kept to a minimum, I smoke, and dearly wish that my peers in my youth had not encouraged me to smoke, and that I hadn't complied, I would never agree to anything which would encourage youngsters to smoke.

Only if sex scenes, (including kissing), fight scenes, anything to do with warfare, stealing, drugs, eating none vegetarian meals, breaking wind, giving cheek to your elders, giving cheek to your younger's, racist, sexist and well basically anything that you might watch while eating pop corn are banned, then yes, smoking on the silver screen should be completely taken away from innocent eyes.

I suppose 'love scenes' in films lead to unwanted pregnancies, and the spread of STDs.
