If it's sore, you need cold, damp cloths spread on the burnt skin first of all. You need to cool it down so keep swapping the cloths and dipping them in cold water. When the heat has reduced, gently massage in Vaseline Intensive Care lotion, it moisturises your skin without being greasy and I've found it better than any after-sun cream (and a lot cheaper). Then a fan blowing on your back may help.
I always have a tan and I don't burn because I spend a lot of time outdoors (gardening), even when it's not so hot, with as much of me exposed as is decent. I always use sun cream and, if the sun is hot, I reapply it 2 or 3 times a day. I once burned badly (I was only 14) and I've never forgotten the pain!
