Someone asked me today what the population of Accrington was, and I didn't have a clue... Wouldn't even like to hazard a guess... Can anyone let us know what it is please?

Re: The population of Accrington ?

If you follow the first link the population of 32,746 is for Accy, Hyndburn has a population of 76,000

Well you're closest by my reckoning, Tealeaf. Going off Government statistics from the 2001 Census it was 81,496 in Hyndburn then.

Re: The population of Accrington ?

Reading the Link quoted above (thisislancashire) I'm just wondering if they have excluded the populations of Altham, Huncoat & Baxenden, which appear as seperate entities....that would expain the difference for Accrington between the 32,000 and 40,000 (my guess)..anyway, about 80,000 total is close. The total population of Hyndburn (or it's historic equivalent) has harldly changed in the last 90 years, while the population of the country as a whole has increased by over 50%.

Re: The population of Accrington ?

I think it's gone up a bit in the last 15 years or so. I remember when I was at school we learnt that the population of Accy was around 28.0000. They may have misled us of course, but if not, that could mean the area is prospering and people from outside are coming in. I think in the 1800s the population was around 40.000 and it dropped as mills began to close.
