I remember it as a not very nice place in the late 80's. I always assumed it was the people living in the area that caused it's decline. I did not realise it was the Council's fault, how did the Tories manage to 'mash it up'?

Re: tories

have to admit i'm not sure of the council, but a tory goverment ignoring british firms in east lancs that pleaded for equality in manufactured goods like textiles and engineering while imported goods flooded the area, all under the "spirit of free enterprise" the growth of over 3 million unemployed, a goverment that encouraged strikes so as to break unions, those tories!
the then goverment tried to break this community and some went under. even the tory MP at that time for this area turned his back on his own party, the council and the people living in huncoat didn't have a chance.

Re: tories

I am sorry but the only reason I saw for the decline of the area was the people themselves. The place became a dumping ground for rubbish and vandelism was rife.

Re: tories

The council tried doing up the whole area around Within Grove in the mid 80's but the cancer had already set in.

Re: tories

It happens with all estates at some time or other. Some stay problem areas others manage to sort themselves out usually due to decent residents finally saying enough is enough and doing something about the numpties that cause the problems!!

Re: tories

I remember when decent, caring, clean, tidy people lived in the area, some still do. Unfortunately you get one lot of scruffy people who don't care and dump rubbish etc and that leads to decent people moving out and more scruffy people moving in, and some of the other people who tried to keep theirs decent developing a couldn't care less attitude because the rest of the area is a dump.

It's hard for the people who do look after their property and try to keep it nice, especially when battling vandalism. I'm sick and tired of vandals etc.

I can't see how the tories can be blamed for it though, unless the scruffy residents are all tory.
