Re: Town centre roundabout.
This is from the Highway Code and has a little picture to explain roughly what I said.
When reaching the roundabout you should
give priority to traffic approaching from your right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights
check whether road markings allow you to enter the roundabout without giving way. If so, proceed, but still look to the right before joining
watch out for all other road users already on the roundabout; be aware they may not be signalling correctly or at all
look forward before moving off to make sure traffic in front has moved off
186
Signals and position.
When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave
When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want
When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want
When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.

Re: Town centre roundabout.
Nice one Gayle, but I have a tendency to think that it may confuse people further, the diagram is fine one a 4 way roundabout, but for the multi turn roundabouts it just says choose the appropriate lane. lol typical government standard explanation!

Re: Town centre roundabout.
Think when drivers are doing their test they should go to Nelson. Theyd soon learn how to get round roundabouts. I hated that one i took over there.

LOL i much preferred Nelson/Burnley way even the big scary white knuckle roundabout towards burnley TC, so yeh great for practice especally the double ones, funny never failed on those LOL, its much better to drive round there than Blackburn [way they kept & keep changing the road layouts & lanes], if my theory certificate time hadn't elasped & being able to afford more, i may of done much better on my tests in Nelson than previous ones at blackburn .

Re: Town centre roundabout.
I did my tests at blackburn, nelson and bury. I passed at Bury. Failed at Blackburn and found out why as well and wasnt a happy person. While i was out on the test my driving instructor was talking to another instructor and they said to her that there was a new manager in charge of the test centre and the pass rate at blackburn was 32% the new one wanted to bring it down to 27%. Guess who had the new manager as the tester? He failed me because he told me to late which lane to go into and i missed seeing the feeder arrow.
And before anyone says anything about the numerous tests i did - i did eventually pass.

Re: Town centre roundabout.
Always use the right hand lane when turning onto Hyndburn road, I cant understand the drivers who are going Right (Hyndburn Road) but are in the left lane thus going all the way round on the outside.

Re: Town centre roundabout.
There's an added problem with that roundabout. There are times when cars stop in the middle of Union Street and the traffic backs up onto the roundabout.

Re: Town centre roundabout.
I'm a right hand lane person too. Before the roundabout was built it was always a right hand turn onto Hyndburn Rd. Plonking a roundabout in the middle of the road doesn't make it any less of a right hand turn..

How can it be a right hand turn from Eastgate Lettie ?? Beyond 90 degrees is a right hand turn, this is clearly around 85 approx! Remind me never to travel with you two sisters ..

Re: Town centre roundabout.
The problem I have had with the roundabout is when slowing to take the exit for Homebase ( coming from the Eastgate side ) Sometimes those coming from Hyndburn Road just don’t realise that there is a turn off directly to their left and start to pull out as you slow down….quite a few times I have had to abort going into Homebase and go round the roundabout again to avoid a collision.

When coming down Eastgate to go onto Hyndburn Rd...... which way do you turn your steering wheel Katex??? I have to turn mine right in order to get around to Hyndburn Rd, therefore, it is a right hand turn. Remind me never to let you drive my car....

LOL .. well it is a roundabout, and therefore going in a circle, clockwise, so have no choice but to turn your wheel right, even if you were taking the first 'left' down Union Street .. this is getting more complicated.
See the diagram in Gayle's post.

I have never turned my steering wheel right to go down Union St from Eastgate.. From the left lane my wheel is turned slightly left to get on to the roundabout, straight for a bit, then left to get onto Union St...
