Re: Treacle Row Oswaldtwistle?

According to the interweb thingy Treacle row was situated opposite the Empire Cinema on Union Rd (highlighted in red on the pic below)

Re: Treacle Row Oswaldtwistle?

Thanks for taking the time to do that Accy Explorer. We walked down Union Road yesterday evening and found the remains of the old Empire cinema - which we think was down an alley just after the old Rhyddings annexe. Looks like Treacle Row was where the old annexe is now. Unless somebody knows anything different!?

On the map he gave you what is labelled as Empire is actually Palladium.
I recall seeing old photos of Treacle Row on the LCC Mario map website

Re: Treacle Row Oswaldtwistle?

I believe that Treacle Row was knocked down to allow the laying of the tram lines.
Quite right that is the Palladium. The Empire was situated just North of the school and behind the Royal pub.

Re: Treacle Row Oswaldtwistle?

Perhaps the name arose to show that the inhabitants were living in poor property as they were able only to feed on treacle butts.

Has this any relation to the treacle mines in Sabden or the boggets there

I don't think there's a Sabden link, Mick. There was a Treacle Row in North Manchester. the cotttages were inhabited by colliers, so maybe their black faces were linked to black treacle.

A cheap source of energy for the poor inhabitants of the area I think.
