Re: Uniforms...

I have had a couple of jobs where i had to wear a uniform and its always been free. One place where i worked the uniform was given free and when you returned it at the end of your employment you got 30quid (but if you didnt take it back they took the 30quid out your final wage).

Re: Uniforms...

We get our uniforms free at Tesco. This is just the basics though depending on your contracted hours (if you work more you get more items) but any extra items you want you have to pay for, i think its fair.

Re: Uniforms...

when i used to be an assistant manager - the staff had to wear uniforms - the company could redeem the costs through end of year tax etc so the staff didnt pay - is was quite a few years ago but i should imagine it hasnt changed that much
i also seem to remember that you yourself can claim a small amount of money back for clothing -(about £50 per year not a lot but better than a kick in the teeth)
i would ring the tax office and ask

Re: Uniforms...

also if you are paid minimum wage - then effectively making you buy the uniform you have to wear at work is reducing your wage to below the minimum wage
seems silly but true
did you know that if you wash your uniform at home you can claim tax back for that aswell- only if you dont have the choice to wash at work though

Re: Uniforms...

If you have to pay for it (and my opinion is that you should not!) then make sure that you get receipts for it all.

You get a basic amount to cover clothing etc off in your tax allowance, but if its more you will need the receipts to prove it.

When I last had to wear a uniform I had 3 of everything, 1 to wear, 1 in the wash & 1 for emergencies.
If your uniform is required by the employer them IMO it is upto them to provide & pay for it. There should also be no discrimination between what men & women have to wear, I.E. men should not be forced to wear a tie when women do not have to wear a similar item. but they do grrr... I hate ties.

(I got a clip on tie & never do up the top button, looks a mess but I am "wearing" it lol).

Re: Uniforms...

If we wear the tunic top then this is provided but if we want to wear the alternative polo shirt then we have to pay for it.
