Uniforms...

Does anyone know if a company can MAKE you wear a uniform if you have pay for it yourself?

when i worked in nursing homes the money was taken out of our wages for the uniform, and yes we had to wear one

Stupid waste of money but they rake it in anyway...

When i worked as a support worker (similar to caring) we paid for our own but it wasn't compulsary to wear it,was wondering if this applied to everywhere or just that company.
My Partner works for quite a big company that is saying they are bringing in uniforms and they are going to cost quite a bit.
Was hoping he could turn round and throw some legal thing in their face saying he didn't have to wear it....its not to bad atm because he wears very smart shirts and ties that he buys himself which means he has lots of them.....hence i can be lazy with the washing if im ever ill or too tired because he always has loads of spare clean ones.
Suppose with the good weather here it wont be too bad washing a uniform.

most companies make you wear a uniform to protect yourself, in nursing homes we had to wear them for obvious reasons and to save our own clothes, they also make you and the company look smart, make you look like you 'belong' too, i'm sure they wouldnt want you coming in in tatty looking clothes, its just the same for school uniforms too

at work our dress code is about to chnage to make it compulsory for blokes to wear suits. previously we only needed a collared shirt ( not even a tie ). Its notgoing down well with some.....

Persoanly I wear a suit anyway, I think it makes you look more professional

Im sat here in my uniform from work - a blue polo shirt and navy trakkie bottoms. Dont have to pay for them. In fact the trakkie bottoms i wear for work are the old trakkie bottoms from the uniform before because they ordered the wrong size trakkies for me and they were too big. We can wear any navy trakkie bottoms if you have the attendants uniforms, as long as they are plain navy and no names on them. The receptionists have blouses or shirts and either a navy skirt or navy trousers. The only one who doesnt wear a uniform is the manager. Our uniforms at the minute come from system hygiene.

Ive had to wear uniforms at a few of the places ive worked for but they have always provided them for me, i have never had to pay (thats with 3 different companies)

Corker is one of the smartest at his work IMO,although they all look professional and clean/tidy.Even my neighbours have commented to me how smart he looks everyday-nowt to do with me though....he picks his clothes,pays for his clothes and even irons his clothes-i just wash/dry them......and tear them off him

terms and conditions of employment

I seem to remember some years ago that a guy took his firm to court because they wanted him to wear a tie and he didn't want to, my memory of it is very vague, but there was quite a lot of coverage at the time, it may have been aout 5 years ago and I can't remember the outcome

We had £10 taken out of our wages for the polo shirts and fleeces but when we leave when we bring back the uniform we get the money back, seems fair to me.

Very fair!That seems a sensible idea to me.Especially as its £16 for the lasses tunics-seems very steep to me..Prob making alot of profit on that.

My dad used to be an FLT driver and he had to pay for his own steel toe caps even tho they had to have them...

If you pay for your own work clothing that the company says you have to wear, then you should get the amount off your tax, i was awarded £40 reduction in my tax yearly because i had to pay for my own trousers and shoes, the shirts were free from the company
